  We’ve really wanted to try Anju for some time now, so our lunch may have been a little disappointing. Nothing was bad, but as a whole we were underwhelmed. So the good: Friendly service, the food was decent with an interesting menu. We tried the Okonomiyaki, which was an omelette of sort, with shrimp, pork belly and kimichi. The overall combination flavors didn’t seem to stick out, while the two sauces on the plate did. I couldn’t tell there was any kimichi or pork in there? The Shoyu Ramen broth was very meaty, almost too homemade? I know it sounds odd, but it seemed to be missing some sort of finish. In the ramen were plenty of springy noodles, roast pork and scallions. So it was very good, but again, like something I could make at home. The duck yakisoba was the highlight, filled with rich duck and a great meld of flavors. So while the food was decent, the place is small and very loud and there were merely 4 tables seated. And given the few customers at a mid day hour, getting our meals was pretty slow and the lukewarm tap water was far from refreshing water and the added mint and lemon seemed only to serve as a visual, oddly not perceptible in taste. So we’re glad we tried, but sad it wasn’t the knockout we expected.

  Really loved this place in charming Kittery, ME. We got the potato salad (with bacon and roe), pork belly and shrimp okonomiyaki, and a couple of their noodle dishes. All very tasty, sharp flavors, and good value for our money. Will definitely return next time we’re in the area! confessionsofachocoholic.com
