After my foray to Walters I wandered over to the Monument Square farmers market and decided to grab a coffee. Arabica is on the way so in I went! I was tempted by a lot of their pastries (they have a pastry chef!) but decided to grab a Milky Way ‘coffee’ to satisfy the caffeine/pastry conundrum I was experiencing. 🙂 Perfectly blended and not ‘sicky-sweet’ like some of the drinks at Starbucks (a place I abhor). It hit the spot on all counts. Looking forward to returning with my laptop to get work done and enjoy a pastry while doing it.

Forgot to make my order. The atmosphere and options at Arabica seemed to fit the bill, and I am sure most people enjoy it very much. However, when I order something as simple as hot tea, and the staff forgets to make my order, it is bound to leave a bad first impression. Most likely will not be back due to poor customer service, which is unfortunate because it seems to have great potential.

When hearing all the hoopla on the street about Arabica’s toast, I was skeptical. I mean it’s just toast people. But a I sit here in the cafe with nothing but crumbs left on my plate, I mist succomb to the popular tide of emotion over The Toast. Freshly baked and thickly sliced (but not too thick) cinnamon-raisin bread, toasted to perfection – the cinnamon swirls actually leave space betweenbthem to allow the toasting to achieve a 3-D effect of crispness which also allows the butter and jan to drift down into the crevasses of The Toast. And let’s discuss the butter, a sweet butter to my taste, more to the Irish methods o butter production than American and kept at room temperature which keeps the deep flavor alive. Well buttered The Toast is then layered by a fresh strawberry jan locally produced from strawberries on Casco Bay. These people are serious about their toast, and judging from the line of Portland peeps so are they. Almost everyone getting their morning caffeine fix is also getting an order of toast – wrapped in foul to go – with a certain greedy look on their faces, much like a fine art collector has when he is about buy a long lost Monet from the attic of an unsuspecting grandmother. Only that this grandmother at the register knows exactly what she’s got….The Toast.

Great espresso!. They have THE BEST espresso in town and they overall make great coffee drinks!

Good Coffe and geat toast. Arabica features an excellent cup of coffee and Portland’s best toast: Long live Doug’s house of toast!

I love Arabica But-. Sometimes their Lattes just aren’t hot enough. I don’t want the milk scalded, but I do like it more than lukewarm. The atmosphere is lovely, and the toast is the best in town, as are their bagels and scones. The baristas can be a bit on the pretentious side and often on weekends service can be slow.

Unwilling to accomodate simple requests. I went to get a cappuccino. I asked the barista if she could put a packet of sugar in the cup before pouring it so that it wouldn’t ruin the presentation. She said she would not. That she could put a flavored syrup in, but not sugar. The packets of sugar were at the counter, I picked one up and said, that it was their sugar, and I’d only put it in afterwards, but that if she put it in the cup before she poured it, I wouldn’t ruin the foam. She reiterated that it was Arabica’s policy that only flavored syrups could be put in and that I would have to put my own sugar in. That was the last time I ever went there.
