Wonderful Ethnic Experience. When I eat at Asmara, I feel like a guest in Asmeret Teklu’s home I have been lucky enough to know about this restaraunt since it opened. It is my favorite place to eat. Anywhere. Ever. The food is amazingly delcious in ways that food can only dream to be. The honey wine is to die for. I have never had a negative experience here. In fact, eating here always puts me in a good mood whether it’s from being recognized and welcomed as I walk in, watching Asmeret’s kids do homework while I eat, or just enjoying the hard work, skill, and passion that she puts into her food. I am so glad this restaraunt has stood the test of time in Portland and that Asmaret’s hard work has paid off so fruitfully. She certainly deserves it.

Good food but….. Let me preface this review by saying that everything we had to eat was delicious. My significant other & I went in to Asmara on a quiet Tuesday night and were one of two tables for our entire meal. We were quite hungry and so we ordered the Vegetarian Sampler and a Veggie Sambusa each. We anticipated taking home some leftovers because the Sampler is $36 and is described as being enough for 3-4 people. After a fairly short wait, a large plate was placed in front of us and we dug in. Like I said before, everything tasted great. However, when the plate was taken away before we had finished and we could have finished it all. For $36, I think we expected to get a little more, especially considering that we paid more than it would have cost to buy 4 separate entres.Additionally, when we pointed out that we had never received our Veggie Sambusas, they weren’t taken off the bill, possibly due to the language barrier?Overall, the food was very good & we will probably be back, just not for the Vegetarian Sampler. Still hoping to try the Sambusas at some point too!

This is a fantastic experience that one might not expect to find in the state of Maine. The perfectly spiced food, tender injera, and warm hospitality would make this eatery a bargain at twice the price. Lamb Beghi is almost always my go-to meal, but the vegetarian selections are varied and worth a try, too.

Great Restaurant – Something Different. Asmara is the ultimate in comfort food- African/Eritrean Style.Spicy blends are simmered in big pots all day and the owner/chef is often the only one in the kitchen preparing the dishes- so plan for a leisurely experience. Most importantly, chose the Injera bread instead of rice- this is a flat, spongey bread made from a protein-packed grain from Africa- definitely a superfood. Dishes can be spicy or not- so specify if you have a preference. A true gem & great to have a truly unique dining experience in Portland.

This undiscovered gem is tucked away in a neat little space just off of Congress Street. The eatery is run by a family who moved from Eritrea about ten years ago. The food is excellent, and is a perfect example of just how diverse Portland’s dining scene really is. I hope that more and more people come to discover their wonderful, and underpublicized cuisine.

Such a wonderful restaurant. We discovered Asmara a few years ago. Fresh, delicious, traditional Eritrean food. FRESH injera (bread)! I thought it had closed and just found it’s open. I’m on my way!!!
