Great Place. Food that just can not be beat Friendly stall and a fun place
First Visit. Our son Chris and his girlfriend, Heather, invited us. Told us we would enjoy it and they were right. Friendly service, great choices. All 4 meals were great….scallops, 2 different steaks, spanika ?
Great atmosphere, awesome food & drink. My most favorite bar in portland, though i think it will always be norm’s to me – new name doesn’t have a terrific ring to it. aside from that, the bartenders here are awesome. almost always order the burger which is superb. yesterday i got the bbq chicken quesadilla. new england restaurants always seem to have some kinda quesadilla on the menu, but i have to say that this one is extra special.
Amazing Food, Drinks & Atmosphere. My friends and I stopped in to the Congress Bar & Grill last night (Friday July 29, 2011) for a drink and a bite after a concert next door and had some delicious beers and even more delicious offerings from the Bar Menu (offered 10pm-12:45am). Those offerings included french and sweet potato fries (small bowl $2, large plate $5), a green salad ($5), fish cake ($5), pulled pork on a buttermilk biscuit ($6), crispy pot stickers with cold noodle salad ($6), Maine blueberry pie ($5), and chocolate cake with espresso frosting ($5). That’s all I can remember although there were a few other things I believe. We tried pretty much one of everything, with the fish cake and pulled pork sandwich being the favorites (we ordered seconds on the pulled pork!). The pork was so tender and well sauced, the biscuit was incredibly buttery, the thinly sliced red onions added a nice contrast, and the accompanying mini cornichon pickles were adorable. The fish cake was delightfully flavorful and it had a perfect crispy crust that went oh so well with the tartar sauce on top. The fish cake came with a small side portion of garden salad dressed with tasty vinaigrette which was refreshing. The pricing of the bar menu (I’m going back there at some point when I can get in before 10pm to order something off of their real menu) was very reasonable for the quality of the food and service. We also got a few local(-ish) beverages, Abita, Brooklyn Lager, Woodchuck cider (all three ~$4 for a pint) and a couple of very un-local Bud Lites ($3). They also offered PBR for $2 for the local poverty-stricken college hipsters. All around very friendly service, insanely incredible bartender, amazing flavors and quality products, and extremely inexpensive Bar Menu options make the Congress Bar & Grill a top choice for the budget-conscious (and borderline penny pinching) members of the hungry masses around 11:00pm in Portland, ME.
I can’t tell you what these guys are doing differently (New Mgmt? New Chef?), but one thing’s for certain… This place is BACK! I used to frequent Norm’s quite a bit, but over the past few years the food started slipping. But I wasn’t ready to give up on them and gave them one more try. My most recent trip was a big success! The food was great! BBQ Chicken Tacos just the way I remember them. Cheap drinks, great atmosphere, another customer told me there had been some changes on the ownership…whatever you guys are doing, keep it up! welcome back, Bar & Grill!
Killer food! Love new location. Server was the standout. Great guy with beard and glasses truely made the experience memorable.
Blah!. Had a gift certificate so a friend and I went there tonight…The guy at the door with all the tattoos was SO rude that we almost walked out. Instead we stayed and I’m glad because the food was pretty good. I wish that he wasn’t so rude because I would go back if it wasn’t for that.
