I’ve been to the one in Scarborough and it wasn’t that great. Found the food to be on the tasteless side. Had the fried peppers and the carnitas…meh. The jalapeo margaritas were very good however!

I’ve been to El Rayo Taqueria several times, and each time, I’m impressed with the atmosphere, service, and food. As a gluten-free patron, I’m very aware of how much effort a restaurant puts into offering GF dishes, and El Rayo is fabulous. If you prefer a quiet dinner, I would recommend takeout. The food can be spicy, which may be a turnoff for sensitive tongues, but ask! They’ll let you know what’s a good fit for your needs. The fish taco was delicious, as was the mushroom bowl. The lobster cheese dip was incredible.Go and enjoy!

Third times not the charm…. Like other reviewers I have wanted to love El Rayo. We’ve been several times to the Portland location and just today went to their newest restaurant in Scarborough. Hoping the service would be better there we pulled in. We were seated and gave our drink orders-and then the waitress took our orders. And then we waited….and waited…mind you we ordered the golden pineapple (no cooking required) and a plate of grilled chicken nachos…and a quesadilla. Finally the pineapple arrived, and then again we waited…I was ready to leave, and the place wasn’t even busy…it was after lunch 2:30. Finally the waitress brings the food and the nachos were dried out, with a smattering of cheese and a few pieces of grilled chicken ( I think?) no salsa–that you have to order extra for $2.50–my daughter’s quesadilla was really good but the nachos were hard, dry and again I had to ask for salsa. After a few bites I left it. When the waitress asked if everything was OK I said actually I wasn’t a fan of the nachos and could she take them off the bill. She looked surprised and said she would have to get the manager. OMG…really? You couldn’t just be empowered to take them off yourself? Please, so again, we WAITED. The manager finally comes over and looked at me like I was crazy, it was awkward, and I reiterated that I wasn’t pleased with the nachos and could you simply take them off my bill? He said sure, and I’m sorry. And went on to say oh, I thought you might have wanted to chat. Chat? Um, no I just wanted my damn bill and to get the hell out of there. Both locations have abysmal, inattentive wait staff. The menu isn’t great, for a little more money I’d like to get 2 tacos rather one for 3.95 +/- it’s a piece meal menu. And for the exaggerated wait time I’ve encountered at BOTH locales they should be giving complimentary nachos to while away the ridiculously long wait time. For the new location going forward this isn’t good news. I’m done with El Rayo.
