The service was great. Gilbert’s has the best chowder I’ve had in Portland! Nice outdoor seating area as well and a good selection of local beers on tap.

Busy, Busy, Busy! Whenever I stopped in here, the place is packed. Nothing like a cup of clam chowder on a cold day. Tons of clams and heavy cream. My biggest disappointment is finding some healthy options here.

Tried this place with my uncle. Located on Commercial St very close to Ri RA Irish Pub. It’s small, and not fancy, but the food was excellent and so was our service. I ordered a seafood chowder (haddock) and fried clams, and both were excellent. My uncle had some scallops and shrimp, with fries. He enjoyed his meal as well. We even ordered desserts – I had a strawberry shortcake type dessert and that was also delicious. They have an outdoor patio in the back (was closed for winter). Small bar, they do have a few drinks, and a TV above bar. Prices – I would say average for downtown Portland. Not cheap, but not super pricey either. The menu offered many reasonable choices, including appetizers. Negatives – for starters, the place is small. The night we visited, it wasn’t too crowded, but easy to see it could be cramped on a busier night. Not the cleanest place either. I saw quite a bit of dust under a cooler standing near the end of the bar, and they had some dirty crates stacked near rear door. We disliked how small the bar and the TV were. We also noticed a few stools and chairs that had tears and needed to be fixed or replaced, both at the bar and in other places. Overall, I can’t give them a bad rating though – the food was superb and service from woman behind the bar was terrific. Give them a try.

Best. Hands down, the best chowder in the state.

Bad Attitude. Bad attitude. Was told to wait for clean table before sitting. Waited 20 minutes and no one was cleaning tables. Left.

This place was a very hopping place when we visited on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in October. Perhaps it was the beautiful weather, perhaps the great reviews or maybe the Carnival cruise liner docked in the harbor. Something brought enough people into the place to produce a line at the door. This place is not fancy and you should not expect linen tablecloths or silverware. But what we did receive was efficient service and good food. I had my very first lobster roll with chips and a pickle. My wife had the fried scallops. I also got to sample their clam chowder which was excellent. They serve Pepsi products so don’t ask for a Coke. The location is right on Commercial Street near the docks. We sat inside so I didn’t get to see the outside dining area as we were in a hurry to catch our bus. I’d recommend Gilbert’s for a casual lunch.
