A truly tasty meal.. To some of the nay-sayers out there: Kushiya Benkay is by far the best deal for Japanese cuisine in Portland.What more can I say : $3.00 rolls and $2.00 Yakitori grill pieces. Exceptional quality and taste. Very friendly service. We ate for two and had miso soup, quality sake, two apps, 8 yakitori and four big rolls and left satisfied and still had a full wallet!26 Aug, 2012Yakitori Time!. Finally Portland has a traditional Japanese grill! Having eaten at many of NYC’s great Yakitori houses, I can say Kushiya Benkay lives up to my expectations. Comfortable atmosphere and staffed by the expert crew of Benkay. One can start with tasty and unique appetizers such as fried baby octopus and yakibuta roast pork. Chef Ando’s menu includes tasty Yakitori grilled skewers of chicken, berkshire pork, fish and vegetables. Order many skewers as they will only set you back about $3.00 a piece. The Kushikatsu should not be missed. Kushikatsu, or kushiage are breaded and deep-fried meat or vegetables on skewers. Kushi means skewers in Japanese. These tasty morsels of beef, chicken, pork and fish are dilicately breaded and fried to perfection. Truly unbelievable panko breaded tuna with great side of sauces. A full selection of sushi rolls include those found at the excellent parent restaurant Benkay on India St. Chef Ando is known for some of the best sushi rice in town and it is obviously on the menu at this new restaurant. Beer is traditionally served with this fare and a wide selection of regional beers on tap are available. A Yakitori Bento Box comprised of choices ranging from great tempura, yakitori, tasty dumplings and Benkay style sushi roll is a great affordable choice for dinner . A lunch special of Japanese Donburi bowl of perfectly seasoned rice topped with Berkshire pork belly and duck yakitori is a steal for $11.00. For those coming off a late shift they plan be open late to 2AM on Thursday thru Saturday. Go to Kushiya Benkay as soon as possible!
Good Sushi, Bad Service. Unfortunately the bad service overshadows the good food. We were there saturday night at about 6pm. There was 1 occupied table, 1 waitress and 1 chef. We should have had speedy service but instead, it was as if the restaruant was full. There are so many sushi choices around that to be a return customer you need to have outstanding service and great food. Sorry, but this trait alone, will eventually be your demise.

Went to Kushiya Benkay Friday for dinner to try it out…Was amazing…Tried all sorts of different yakatori…My favorites are their scallop and the japanese beef…Was to die for…Cool atmosphere as well, will definitely be back soon for their lunch specials! Pricing was very reasonable (scallop skewer was 3 dollars)
