This is my first time to Maine and so I couldn’t NOT get lobster! And I wanted to be on the water as well just for part of the experience. I looked up restaurants on Yelp and searched them on the map. I selected Scales because of its previous reviews AND because it was right on the water. And it didn’t disappoint!! The atmosphere , the wait staff and the food was all outstanding. Even the fellow patrons were friendly and helpful! lol I travel all over the country and around the world and always look for food and environments that are emblematic of the region……Scales is certainly worthy of representing Maine, whether a solo casual dinner, a romantic occasion or a business get together!
My wife and I and a couple of friends visited Portland and were directed to Scales by a desk personal a local hotel. We decided to give it a try. My wife had the Maine Halibut. She said it was delicious. I had swordfish and found it equally delicious. Service was excellent and the fish extremely fresh. A little pricey, but well worth it. Highly recommend.
Where else could one want to be on a beautiful evening, watching the sun set while eating local oysters that were caught a that day?? Scales of course!! From there it’s a limitless voyage of seafood excellence – you cannot go wrong with anything on this menu. Be adventurous! We had the kohlrabi salad – a vegetable once described to me by a chef friend as nothing more than a dog toy…no use for it on a plate :D. This salad proved him wrong. If it’s on the menu, share the seafood stew and order the garlic chives rolls to accompany. The medley of lobster, haddock, mussels and house made chorizo in a savory, slightly spiced lobster stock will have you dreaming about this the next day.
