Vunderbar!. My wife and I stopped here yesterday just because it looked welcomming and there was a parking place right in front of the restaurant. What a treat. Both had one of the best pea soups ever. I had a grilled brie cheese and applesandwich and wife had spaetzle with grilled onions. Both were excellent and came with cucumber salad. The bread is homemade too! Rest assured we’ll be back.
Good food, interesting place. We decided to try Schulte & Herr last night as we drove by it. There was only one couple eating, but all eight tables had Reserved cards on them. When we told the hostess that we didn’t have a reservation, she removed a card from one of the tables and we sat down. Within ten minutes all the tables were full, but the kitchen staff and the two servers kept everything coming on schedule. The menu consisted of standard German comfort food. I had a cup of pea soup with ham. The peas were only partially pureed which produced a good texture. My wife and I both had onion tart which was also good. Good crust, lots of onion and cheese flavor and it came with a bit of salad. The potato pancakes were in the German style, light and fluffy, made from potato flour instead of the grated potatoes one finds in latkes. They came with house-cured salmon, capers, finely chopped radish and cornichons. Delicious. The salmon was very delicate and soft, without the pellicle one sometimes finds covering house-cured salmon. Since we weren’t very hungry, we decided not to order entrees, but those we saw on other tables looked and smelled good. We will certainly be back soon. BTW, it is BYOB and there is no place close which sells beer or wine, so plan accordingly.
Amazing German food. A limited menu but we tried several different appetizers and main courses and they were all excellent!! Highly recommend this restaurant.
Great food!. We spent a week in Portland for our honeymoon and went to Schulte and Herr at the end of our visit. Wish we had discovered it sooner! We had the goulash and braised beef dinner and it was absolutely DELICIOUS! Great service, great food!It is definitely worth the 20 minute walk from downtown Portland!
Support These Guys. They Get It.. This place is a micro-restaurant done right. Tiny & comfortable (say hi to the cooks on your way to the bathroom.) Small, thoughful menu featuring quality ingredients. I’ll take this over a mass-produced caesar salad for lunch any day!
Delicious Homemade German Food. Our entire meal, from the bread and liptauer spread, to the onion tart (zwiebelkuchen), to the main courses (tender sauerbraten and a unique seafood gulasch), to the light and airy German cheesecake with cherries – was fantastic. The quality of the meal combined with the friendly and attentive staff made for a delightful meal. We’re looking forward to coming back soon.
What a find!. My son and I had brunch here and had the most delicious potato pancakes – golden crisp with a moist, light center. The accompanying lox was very tasty. We had sides of beets and cucumber salad. I asked about the rye bread, and was given a sample of three different kinds (regular, sour-dough and sunflower). It was very hard to choose a favorite because they were all excellent! For dessert we had the honey molasses cake. We were both a little stuffed but happy after our meal. We’ll come back on our next trip to Portland!
