No Gracias.. First off, I have not been to Sonny’s in months so maybe things have miraculously changed. Places like Local and Sonny’s would not have lasted a year if not for the gorgeus and comfortable spaces. The food at both is sub par at best. However, this review should stand strictly for Sonny’s so I wll try to keep Local out of it. For a foodie town, Portland really isn’t that critical and Sonny’s if a great example of that. People are very often concerned more with image than quality. The wool can be easily pulled over a hipsters eyes I suppose. I have given Sonny’s more than a few chances and it has always fallen short. The chourico, in particular, has been an eternal disappointment. I have grown up eating the stuff and am always eager to try it in a town where it is hard to find. Each time it has been flavorless blobs of nothing. It is as though they have no clue what they are attempting to achieve. The bottom line with the food overall is that it thinks its better than it is. The concept is fine but the cooks don’t even come close to nailing it. They are so far away from nailing it, in fact, that it is almost offensive. As I said, I have not been there for months, and I have no plan on returning.
Beets, chile relleno, yam fries. After a day of bar-hopping, landed at Sonny’s and had a few great appetizers. Golden beets with greens, chile relleno and their yam fries were all so yummy. Bartender was nice. A plus for me personally is that they serve my favorite gin – Hendricks. Cocktail offerings sound nice & creative too – like the apple pie martini and Hemingway’s Daiquiri (a classic).
Sonny’s in the (October)Snow. When we heard the weather forecast a realized that we were in for a late-October blast of rain and snow we quickly decided we needed a dinner that would really warm us up. We chose Sonny’s and we were not disappointed. Starting with cocktails (I had the 7 Train) through apps (Empanadas) and entrees (Poblano Cheeseburger) we were very please with out meals, our service and the overall feel of the restaurant as we watched the snow fall outside. The food was good and the staff was friendly and efficient. This was not our first meal at Sonny’s and I don’t think it will be out last.
Good food but a little too self conscience.. I loved my meal the ribs were great, service was great… but there is something wrong, almost like the chef is trying so hard constantly seeking approval from others and has little faith in his own creations. I bet he reads blogs about his place and skips all of the good ones and focuses only on the negative. so much that he believes everything written about his place is set in stone. I almost feel bad for him. At least he isn’t the guy across the street. That guy is an ego maniac……yeah you Harding.
Disappointed. Was expecting great things after dining numerous times at Local 188. Arrived early on mid week day for dinner. There was a crowd at the bar, but we ate in the dining room area. First, it was hard to find anything appealing on the menu. Then, after ordering, I think it was some beans and veggie combo, what arrived was very unappetizing. The price charged for what we got seemed high too. Then the noise level kept ratcheting up, the service was off, and I just wanted to leave. Love Jay’s cooking, wanted to give it another try, but just can’t summon the courage to return.
Great food! Amazing Bartenders! Please go check it out for yourselves! But you will not be dissapointed
