Don’t miss! Really great drinks and apps in a warm unpretentious environment. I’d recommend eating on the second floor, great exposed bricks and a booth near the window gives a nice view of the surrounding hood. Try the hake chowder a fresh take on chowder!
We planned a lunch and catch up at Duck Fat on Middle Street in Portland, got lucky with a parking spot right out front, but alas that trendy spot has exceeded their service capacity, the wait was long and the likelihood that we would be able to have a chatty leisurely meal nil. Our luck continued however because we discovered The East Ender!!! The menu offers creative options, our waitress guided our selection with delightful descriptions of taste texture and history, and then delivered scrumptious food – the Brussel sprouts side is fantastic; I would go back for this dish alone. We were able to take our time, chat and enjoy the food as we watched other diners come and go – all looking pleased with their decision to give East Enders a go. I hope they enjoy great success, but then there will be two restaurants on Middle street with a waiting list.
First visit under the new ownership. It’s kinda sad that this friendly little engine-that-could of a place is treated as a mere backup to Duckfat and Eventide. The barbecue is no more, but smoke makes its way into a few of the dishes. We tried the cold smoked burger and the pork belly sandwich– both served on brioche, both with Asian touches and both good. Long steak fried were almost wedges, with crisp exteriors and fluffy interiors. Pickles and kimchee with the pork belly were very nice. pigtrip.net
Easter Dinner at the East Ender. We were on our own for Easter and decided to check out the newly re-opened East Ender. We’d loved the food at the owners’ Small Axe Truck and have been looking forward to what these two creative chefs would offer. They didn’t disappoint. We started with the crab and lobster tostada with Asian pear, avocado and salsa … Yum! I had the grilled marinated black cod … loved every bite. A friend recommended the whole trout, but my husband opted for the bouillabaise. We both decided this kitchen hits nothing but home runs. Can’t wait to return for more.
Is reopening in March with new management, chefs, menu and front of the house renovations.
Hit or miss. Been twice for brunch and the food has been terrific both times. Last visit we sat down around noon and waited until nearly 1 for our orders to come out, and about 15 minutes for coffee. It wasn’t even busy. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and saying they must have been short-staffed, because if not, it was completely unacceptable to wait that long for brunch, which is largely prepped in advance.
Nice Meal. Great fried chicken, salad and service, OK cod chowder (it was more potato than fish).
