Just returned from 5 Islands. I’ve always enjoyed the food and the fantastic views before. Today the food was so-so. The lobster roll I had was very skimpy on the amount of lobster and the stuff that passed for butter (probably some bad margarine) on the outside of the lobster roll had an offensive taste that overshadowed the taste of the whole lobster roll and left an aftertaste in my mouth. The steamed potatoes were not cooked enough and didn’t taste like they were fresh anytime recently. I was raised on a potato farm in Aroostook Co so I know what a good potato tastes like, these weren’t it. One of my friends with me had the lobster roll as well and agreed that the taste was awful. Worst experience ever at 5 Islands. The views remain spectacular but unless the food gets back to what it used to be, I’d be disinclined to return.
Here’s to the lobster…… I’ve wanted to try this place ever since I read about it in the newspaper and since we were going to take a trip to Maine for our 25th anniversay I had to go find this place. I’m glad I did as we went back twice after because of the wonderful meal we had the first time. The food is simply prepared with little fuss and pretentiousness. We both got the steamed lobster, red potatoes and corn. You order your meal in the little shack and go out on the dock, and in our case, watch the sun set on the bay. The weather got a little nippy and the bugs start coming out but the meal made up for all that and more. You rent a shell cracker (you get your money back when you turn them in) and start breaking away. I started with the claws and worked my way down to the tail. What an experience. Dip the succulent lobster meat in the melted butter and enjoy. Yummy. This was the best part of our trip of great food experiences. A bit of a drive if you’re coming from Portland, but we were already staying in Brunswick so it wasn’t too bad.
Fresh Seafood & a Beautiful View. For less than $20 you can get a Moxie and a lobster roll with a beautiful view of the bay. The only way it would be fresher is if you made it yourself.
