Planned on this being just a passable dinner but that was okay since it is walking distance from the place I am staying. Big surprise! Great food here. Fun beer selection, tempting desserts and great bbq selection. Absolutely fantastic grilled oysters!! These rivaled what I had in New Orleans. I regret not having ordered a full dozen. I also had magi magi tacos which were wonderful. I know I will be coming back here. Its a little neighborhood place, but I would imagine people come down from Portland to eat, because it’s definitely worth the trip.

Neighborhood bar kinda place. Charming at the first glance, good atmosphere. I love me some BBQ, but the food was just ok here not my favorite, but if i lived in the neighborhood i might hang out at the bar.

Where’s the flavor?. Three of us arrived hungry and hoping to enjoy our old neighborhood’s newest restaurant. Unfortunately, other than the service, there was not much to recommend this place. The chicken wings were expensive, chewy and flavorless. The pick-3 meats and sides, which we all shared, also had no flavor — even the two sauces offered on the table did little to enhance the taste. The tiny little side of collard greens was ho-hum but not ‘bad’, the cornbread dry and boring. The presentation of the food was equally boring and colorless.

Great food, and local brews.. Let me start off by saying, I don’t eat meat. Being a vegetarian for the past 8 years or so, I browse Portland, and the surrounding cities often looking for tasty, local, veggie friendly options when eating out. I know, I know…it’s a BBQ restaurant. However, Elsmere does offer a few options for those looking for that option!!I’ve ordered the Black Bean Burger now at least 3 times, and each time I’m impressed with their focus on quality, consistency, and taste. Also, I usually grab a side of the Mac n Cheese…I’m a sucker for that stuff. Even the sides are full of flavor, although a tad pricey. For those interested in just going for a local brew. I was happy to see that the owners of this establishment have a palate for good local beer. Any beer made by Maine Beer Co, Oxbow, or Allagash White is sure to be a hit. They also serve some other popular beer, including a selection from Shipyard.I would be even happier if Elsmere expanded their taps, or maybe in the future cycling in some higher end beers (ex: Allagash Curieux, or maybe even Tripel)The bar itself was excellent, and the sign hanging in the back gave it a retro feel. Atmosphere overall seemed on par with other places I’ve been…a la GLB. The times I have gone seem to be extremely busy, or at least typical of a Friday, or Saturday night at any restaurant.Wait staff including the bar tender were pleasant, and quick to bring either food or more beverages. All in all, definitely worth a try…even for vegetarians 😉

Still up in the air about this place. First time I went the only thing left was cornbread and oysters… 2nd time I had the pulled pork sandwich, pork had no flavor I had to drench it in the house sauce. House sauces were good. Overpriced considering the atmosphere is somewhat uncomfortable and the food was just ok. I’m hopeful it will get better with time. Place also needs a hot bartender…

So-So BBQ. Was eager to give this new BBQ place a try. Made me miss the old, original Beale St. I ordered the wings, expecting fall-off-the-bone, tender smoked goodness. Plenty of smoke flavor, but wings were dry meat firmly attached to the bones. My companion had dry, pulled pork that needed lots of table sauce. Sides were mingy, even at $2. B&M makes better beans, and they are canned. Collard greens were oversalted and the marinated coleslaw could’ve used a touch of sweetening to balance excessive sharpness. How about a red and white house wine at a lower price point than your standard list? Pricey for a BBQ joint. We’ll give another try, but it’ll be takeout, with our own sides at home. Gotta hope the ribs are more satisfying than the wings.
