BEST PIZZA EVER. This pizza is so delicious its hard to believe. I am from New York, so I am always a bit skeptical when out of the state, but this pizza is truly blissful. I went to school at Colby and must have gone at least 2 or 3 times a month! Now that I have graduated, my family and I all agree that we would drive from Long Island to Maine just for the pizza at grand central! Also great atmosphere and fantastic service!

Decor lacking, food yummy. When this restaurant changed owners recently, I was hoping they might improve the atmosphere (dank painted rug, down-at-the-heels decor). On the positive side, the setting is homey and evocative of the 1970s and patrons having positive associations with that historical period might see it as a nostalgia trip. But you should certainly pay a visit despite external appearances. The truth is that the setting doesn’t matter because the pizza is extremely good. I’m from NY/NJ and have always been disappointed by the nasty pizza sold in most Maine restaurants: the crust is typically thick, the sauce not spicy enough, and the cheese far too heavy. While they don’t serve classic NY thin-crust pizza, Grand Central does serve a delicious alternative–brick oven fresh! Summary: look beyond the externals and give this place a try.

Unimaginative and unsatisfying. Every time that I have been to the Grand Central Cafe I can’t help but feel that it only gets business because it is the only restaurant of its kind in the area, and because people actively try to look for the good in what they are getting. However, the pizza is incredibly sub-par considering the amazing potential of local maine ingredients and the delicious things anyone with an imagination can do with pizza. It demonstrates a poor understanding of and respect for food, and it was almost criminal. The service and atmosphere were also underwhelming. The servers seemed classless and much more preoccupied with socializing with one another than actually doing their jobs, and the atmosphere is only fun to the uncritical eye. They threw some board games on the tables, which seemed nice at first but I now realize is to occupy the customers because the servers are so incredibly unmotivated and obviously not very hard workers. It seems like the type of place that hires family friends instead of people that would be good at their jobs. The place does not put any effort into improving their menu because they realize that other pizza places in the area do not do what they do, and in that way I felt as though they were stealing my money, leveraging low-effort just because they know that their customers are in the mood for a flatbread style pizza. Though i return to the area frequently, I will NEVER be going back to Grand Central. I am not willing to indulge their business model, I would prefer to experiment with creating my own pizzas than go back. The only positive is that it could accommodate my friends with gluten and dairy allergies, however even those friends, who have very limited options in terms of where they can eat out in the area, were underwhelmed by the place.

WOW!. Today the Grand Central Cafe was very busy and had a fun upbeat atmosphere. The waitress and the cook were really moving. If they keep up that amount of business I feel like maybe they’ll need an extra pair of hands to help out on a Sunday? The food was super (as always) and I’m glad I chose today to go in. They are really gearing up for the Maine International Film Festival so there was a lot of excitement about that. I can’t wait to go back. Thanks Grand Central Cafe, keep up the good work.
