Classic Maryland crabhouse (except no sit-down dining). One of my goals on any trip to my old stomping grounds in Maryland is to eat crabcakes. Shoreline made me flash back to places I used to go to in the 1970s, right down to the hairstyles on the sneery counter girls who served me while looking annoyed that I bothered them with my presence. The place is not at all flash inside and smells slightly of floor mopping fluid. Its more of a market to sell seafood for people to take home than it is a restaurant. They only do takeout; no table service, but the menu is extensive.Shoreline advertises baseball-sized crabcakes, but the one I got on my sandwich was more like a tennis ball. Not that theres anything wrong with that! The crabcake had an adequate amount of stringy backfin meat, not too overboard with the filler. Ive tasted stronger-flavoured crabcakes, but this was OK, very much like what I ate as a kid. Even the white-bread bun was from 40 years ago — on the small side, like they made em then, no sesame seeds, brioche dough or anything trendy. The price — $8.25 for a sandwich, small bag of Utz chips and a container of watery but decent coleslaw — would have seemed outrageous in 1974, but it was a bargain in these times.Shoreline also sells a lot of soups. I skipped the Maryland crab and other traditional varieties in favour of lobster chowder. It tasted more like cheese than lobster, but there were recognisable chunks of meat in there. Not the greatest Ive had, but definitely house-made, so I give Shoreline a thumbs-up for that. If you like plastic chains such as Red Lobster, stay away, but if you’re after old-school classic crab cooking, Shoreline is the real deal.
