Kitchen Nightmare at Box Hil.Pizzeria. Being new to the area, I decided to seek out the better restaurants that serve good crab cakes. Upon my search of the web, I found BHP and figured since it was close to where I live, I would try their food. After arriving and being seated, I should have known that it was not going to be what I expected. The old place mats with local advertisement, and plastic eating utensils. So anyway my wife and I ordered the seafood platter so that we would get a chance to sample everything. While waiting the waitress brought us some bread (hotdog buns sliced in half with garlic butter) and some kind of sauce with no taste to it. A couple of bits and we were done with it. When our food arrived immediately we became concerned because our food all appeared to be over cooked (burned). The fish scallops, oysters, shrimps, crab cakes. and hush puppies all looked alike and smelled the same. We thought that this was going to be fresh seafood, What a big disappointment. Everything on the plates was old and tasted very nasty. The breaded coating on the food was old and the seafood was the same. After taking several bits off our plates we decided that was enough and asked for the check. The waitress brought us a takeout box but we turned it down. $62.00 later we find ourselves very unhappy, and still hungry. The food at this place is definitely not worth it. The restaurant is a DIVE. The people who patronized this place frequently appeared to be in their 60s 70s and didnt appeared to be too concerned. Go ahead if you want, but Ill stay away from there forever.
Best Crab Cakes in Maryland. Box Hill Pizzeria looks like a typical pizzeria, but upon walking in you see it’s packed with customers. Sure, there’s a takeout counter on one side and a separate dining room on the other side. Like many pizzerias, if you want a drink refill, you take you cup up to the machine and refill it. What’s not typical about this pizzeria is that I don’t think anyone goes there for the pizza. Their specialty is crab cakes. In eastern Maryland, a crab cake place isn’t especially uncommon, but I’ve yet to find one that has crab cakes as good as Box Hill. They give you a good sized portion served either baked or fried with almost no filler and huge pieces of lump crabmeat. They also have uncooked crab cakes available for takeout along with instructions to cook them at home and will even ship frozen ones.To put into perspective how good their crab cakes are, I live 90 minutes away and I’ve done the 3 hour round trip to get them. I’m sure their other menu items that are more typical for a pizza place are good too, but I’ve never tried them. I heard about the crab cakes, tried them and haven’t looked at the rest of the menu since!
Good pizza, disappointing crab cakes. Update Sep 21, 2014Grade: B-/C+On our last visit we had the pizza and enjoyed it. After reading about their legendary crab cakes, we wanted to try them this time. Sadly, we were very disappointed with them. The waitress said that the broiled crab cakes were better than the fried so we tried those. Large, at 8 oz. and full of jumbo lump meat, that was the best part of them. The peak of mine had gotten charred while the inside was only just warm. The mix of the crab and mayo was a little too runny and it was lacking in flavor, with little or no Old Bay or other spice mixture. For that matter, the tartar sauce was pretty runny and the cole slaw was plain, too.Next time, we’re going for the pizza.Grade: BBox Hill is an odd marriage of pizza, Italian standards, gyros and Greek specialties, and crab cakes that locals eagerly endorse. The overwhelming aroma of crab meat greets you as you come through the door, entering on a path that is separated from the kitchen by partial glass. The dining rooms lay beyond, one featuring two booths flanked by the restrooms (which provides the aroma of air freshener with that of your food). Box Hill’s menu is involved, but we’d heard that they had good pizza so we went in that direction. I’m pretty glad that we did. We ordered a small with pepperoni and onions…and several minutes later, our waitress returned to see if we were ready to order. Fortunately, she quickly reoriented and remembered that she’d taken and submitted our choice.Keeping in mind our frequent encounters with substandard pizza in Northern Virginia, this was pretty good. Its crust had interest, crispy without being overly dry or chewy and with good flavor. There was a hint of sweetness in the sauce that worked well, and the strings of raw onion were sweet and flavorful. The pepperoni was lackluster, however, almost flavorless against the other ingredients. In all, this is much better than any pizzeria that delivers to us.Maybe we’ll try the crab cakes next time.
Excellent service from Kelly. The house salad dressing is awesome and you can get a bottle to take home. I ordered the crab cake which was good but I believe I would have to give an edge to the crab cake from Fortunato Bros. in Edgewood (haven’t tried the one in Abingdon). The place was packed on a Thursday evening which tells me the rest of the menu must be pretty good too.
Many good food choices, good staff, good prices. Its hard to pick a favorite menu item, but a few are the Lasagna w/ meat sauce. The pizza, and of course the best crabcake I have found so far in any state. The staff is one of the best and they work together very well. I have yet to have a bad experience here.Prices are reasonable. Would like to see a frequent diner card tho, since I eat here so often.Mary
Great Food. Most people come here for the crab cakes, but I like the Pasta. Service is typically very good, but it can get busy if you are eating at a peak time.
Quaint little place. I’ve eaten here several times, but mostly get carryout. You seat yourself and help yourself to drinks. The bad news with this set up is that twice I never got waited on after 15 minutes, so I left. The crabcakes are fantastic, and the carryout service is fast and they are very polite.
