What’s All the Fuss About?. All I have been hearing lately is you have to go to Bud’s at Silver Run. Their food and service is excellent! So I decided to make the trek to see what all the fuss was about. Bud’s is a very small establishment located right off a main road between Westminster, MD. and Littlestown, PA. Outside, the building is non-descript bordering on pass me by but there is something, possibly the sign, that coaxes you in. I think Silver Run, or at least a tributary, runs longitudinally across the parking lot which has to be transversed to get to the restaurant entrance. Once inside, we were greeted by the reservationist and seated promptly. This was a Friday evening reservation for 7:30 and there were approximately 12-14 patrons already seated and in various stages of their meals. The atmosphere is a bit claustrophobic but the dining area is clean and well kept. The MenuThe menu was complete with all the well known cuts of meat and some original recipes of seafood, fowl and pork to round it out. I was told the Sea Scallops and the Duck Two-Ways were to die for so my daughter ordered the duck for her entree and I ordered the Day Boat Scallop appetizer special. We also tried the Oysters Rockefeller and the Italian Sausage and Grits from the appetizer menu. For our entrees my son and I ordered the New York Strip medium rare and my wife had the Salmon Dill. ServiceOur waiter was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu and its ties with the local farmers and millers. He answered all our questions without the slightest hint of an attitude. He was attentive but not overbearing with his presence. Our water glasses were kept filled and all pre-meal condiments were brought to our table promptly. The only slight criticism I have is it took approximately 20 minutes from time we finished our appetizers to when our entrees were served which seemed to me to be a little excessive in such a small restaurant. I have been in much larger restaurants that beat that time hands down.FoodNow here comes the not so nice part. From all I heard about this restaurant, I was expecting a great deal more in this department. To me, there are two major factors in a great meal; one is top quality components and the other is top quality preparation. I can live without the great presentation on the plate and the fancy garnishes but I do demand well prepared quality food indicative of the price that I am paying for it. I am afraid to say I didnt get that at Buds. The highlight of our dinner was the Oysters Rockefeller. They were very tasty and had just the right amount of seasoning. The low points of our meals were the New York Strip steaks. These were gristly throughout the cut and stone cold in the center. I literally left at least 20% of the cut on my plate due to the toughness of the gristle. So of a 14 oz. cut I may have gotten 11 oz. of steak. This was consistent with my sons steak as well all though he eats steak gristle and all without impunity. The Garlic Klondike Gold Mashed Potatoes were cold and on the starchy side but the flavor was passable. My wifes salmon had no evidence of sear and the dill sauce was very scant. The herbed Quinoa was very bland and tepid. My daughters duck was undercooked for fowl and although I am aware the meat is red, it should be ordered at a degree of doneness at least one to one and a half times what you would order beef. This dish was also served cold and the confit was much better than the sliced especially at this cool temperature and degree of doneness. My son had the Italian Sausage and Grits for his appetizer and the general consensus of the table was that it was rather bland and dry as well. My scallops were undercooked and a bit spongy for my taste and the sauce that was with them on the plate completely overpowered the scallops. Finally, for dessert our resident empty legged son-in-law had the bread pudding. He reluctantly allowed all of us to share for the purpose of this review. The pudding lacked some of the eggy taste that I like in traditional recipes of this dish and so it wasn’t as moist as it should be. The Kahlua drizzle which I thought was part of the waiters description wasnt detectable and again the dish was a bit cool.Synopsis After spending $200. + with tip, I couldnt see for the life of me how this restaurant gained such a wonderful reputation. All dishes were served below proper temperature and some down right cold. Where the preparation was acceptable the raw food quality wasn’t and vice versa. I dont think anything tells the truth about the quality of a restaurant better than a impromptu reservation where the table orders all the items people are raving about then sits down to a meal where none of the staff knows to be on their A game. They should always be on their A game for everyone that walks through their door not just for the regulars or known critics. My granddaddy, who was in the food business most of his life once told me, beware of the steakhouse that substitutes your butter knife for a hacksaw as soon as order the steak. His advice is sound and one to live by.
Gem in the countryside. Our party tried the wild boar, seafood appetizer, goat cheese tart, prime rib, catch of the day and a specialty fixed for the vegetarian in the group. Nothing disappointed and all were superb! This is a genuine find that we will visit often. A must try! Great food, atmoshphere, company and wait staff match the high quality of the cuisine.
Incredible. Dinner, Wine, Dessert and Ambiance of Bud’s at Silver Run was phenomenal. It is an amazing restaurant that is great for the family as well as the romantic. We had a large party and sampled many items on the menu and all were simply wonderful. We will definitely be going back again.
Bud’s is the place………. What a GREAT evening!!!!! The food, wine and staff were awesome. We will be back and bring some friends. The steak was wonderful and the blueberry and custard. YUMMY……….Clara and Mike
Definitley a do-over!. Wow! Went there on a recommendation of a friend. Very pleasant place. Great colors and art work. Ken was lots of fun to talk to! Guy you’d like to sit and have a beer with. Dinner started with a wedge salad with bacon and bleu cheese dressing, wow. Bacon on anything? YUM! Hubby had sausage and fingerling potatoes. Sausage was out of this world. Main courses consisted of one crab cake (which was MORE than I could finish) grilled veggies and potatoes. Hubby’s was the filet that was just perfect. Melted in your mouth. It was accompanied by mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. Of course, dessert…chocolate layer cake…need I explain? 🙂 Will for sure be going back for more flavors! Can’t wait!
Maryland crab soup, crab cake and scallops were excellent! Very small, so reservations are a must. Will definitely return.
Bud’s was amazing. I went to this restaurant with a colleague from Hanover, Pa. It might have been a 20 min drive. Well worth the trip! We had a wonderful meal start to finish with some very good wine. I will visit this place again.
