This place styles itself as an oyster bar, & it is, just an atypical one. Very dark, hip, & mod inside, the interior of Black's was divided lengthwise…

Awesome food. Awesome vibe. Nice folks. Just be prepared for the cost. Well worth it, but really should be in the $$$$ category, as most entrees were $25+.
Abominable!. Avoid at all costs! The crab cake sandwich is full of filler, not served on the specified potato roll, and is accompanied by FROZEN french fries. Shame, shame!!Arrogant service staff and manager who just does not care about food and service quality. Why bother?
It’s a really nice restaurant and a good price but I didn’t like what I had. The soft shell crab was undercooked and flavorless and the octopus salad was bland. I know they change the menu like daily but for the amount of people they’re have always I thought it would be much better
Disappointing experience.. This is the letter we sent to Jeff Black regarding our recent experience at his restaurant:Dear Mr. Black -Last night, your flagship restaurant, Black’s Bar and Kitchen, failed us on such a basic level of service and customer attention that after many years of patronage, we will not be returning. The occasion was our son’s birthday, which we were celebrating with his wife and brother. We had reservations for 8:45pm. Our son, his wife and brother arrived at 8pm, notified the matre d’ of their arrival for our party, went to the bar and ordered drinks and oysters. My wife and I arrived at 8:15pm, gave notice of our arrival and the matre d’ directed us to the rest of our party in the bar area. The oysters they had ordered at 8pm finally arrived at 8:30pm. By 9pm, we had not yet heard from anyone about our table so we inquired. The matre d’ informed us that the table they wanted to prepare for us was still occupied and we would have to wait for those guests to leave. By 9:10pm, we protested that we should be seated at the first available table, not a particular table that the staff had in mind for us. Further discussions ensued and another staff member, perhaps the manager (you were not there last night), announced to our astonishment that the staff had not prepared a table for us because we had not announced our arrival. At this point, 9:30pm, we chose to leave your place, not having been seated for 45 minutes after our reservation and an hour and a half after our arrival. Until we made our way to the door, not one of your staff was the least bit apologetic to us or showed any empathy whatever for our situation. We understand that places get busy. However, it was unacceptable to us that your staff made no attempt to accommodate us in any way after a problem arose. We think they forgot about us entirely, until we complained. After that, they first shamelessly blamed the guests who were seated at the table your staff supposedly had in mind for us and then they defensively blamed us for not giving them notice of our arrival, which was untrue. We do not know what has happened to your management of the restaurant in recent years. A dining experience, as you must know, is far more than just the food. We came out for a celebration and honored your establishment by choosing to have it there. Your staff did all they could to ruin the occasion. Fortunately for us, there is plenty of competition in Bethesda on a Saturday night and we had a wonderful celebration and culinary experience the rest of the evening at Grapeseed, which we will be frequenting often.
Good food but unfortunately poor service and overpriced. Open wine priced in excess of a reasonable norm. Too bad.
Great Food!. We decided on the bar rather than sitting down since the place was very crowded but at least it wasn’t as loud as some of the other restaurants. Very relaxed and trendy environment — almost reminds me of Miami :)I had Addie’s mussels and Seared Scallop. The mussels were unbelievable. The creamy sauce was to die for. They give you a basket of bread that you dip into the sauce. The seared scallop was good but not as large as I expected. It was really fresh (like the mussels). Service was better than I expected from other reviews of this place. Our waitress was experienced. We were served only 5 minutes after ordering! Overall this place is pricey but has great food. Come here for a light-hearted date!Next to Try: FRESH Oyster bar. (Half off during Happy Hour)
