Typically I wouldn’t choose a tapas place when alone, but the opportunity to sample Chef Andres’ menu for the first time compelled me to do just that. I was not disappointed, but quite impressed w/ the wonderful small plates & cocktails. The scene is ultra trendy, w/ a giant semicircular bar up a few steps, surrounded by table seating. There’s also al fresco dining, looking towards the shoppers of Bethesda Row’s strolling shoppers. The tapas choices on Jaleo’s menu are numerous & divided into general sections. If struggling to get started, consider the ensaladilla rusa, a formed potato salad mixed w/ tuna & a couple of vegetables. Served alongside for dipping are these crispy, cracker-like digitations, which have a name I’ve forgotten & are sold in a box for home use. Varying textures of the fish, vegetables, & mayo were much different than a typical seafood salad. My second choice was the bacalao fritters. I was interested in trying the fried salt cod as I never had before, yet I’d seen it many times on shows highlighting Portuguese & Italian cooking, including Italian holiday specials. I did enjoy them, along w/ the accompanying aioli, but be warned the fishiness & saltiness are very forward. And for my third selection–I don’t remember. The 1.5 month interval b/t the experience & this writing have fuzzed my brain. I’m almost certain it was the gazpacho, but I remember enjoying it regardless of the details. Ms. Lorena provided very good service. My favorite part of the dining experience, however (& I rarely say this), was the fantastic cocktail, of which I had two (even rarer). The albariz was a sensuous mix of various liqueurs, citrus, & whipped egg whites, making a meringue ish head reminiscent of lemon pie. This was truly an artisanal cocktail.
Excellent service by professional wait staff. For dinner splurged on the 10 Wonderful tapas sampler!Wowwww! Delicious assortment if the chef’s choice. Will definitely be back!!!
Great Service! Delicious Food. Great seat by the window to sip drinks and eat tons of delicious food. We had mussels, octopus, eggplant, bread, just to name a few. When did not like the not steamed mussels, the manager brought out the steamed ones without a blink. It is so nice to have great food and great service. Will definitely eat there again!
Overrated. I understand it’s a Tapas restaurant but the portions are ridiculous especially if you’re with a larger group. Would not come back.
No Bueno. Overpriced, mediocre paella. The non-seafood version isn’t even on the menu. Sangria nothing special either. Great place for suburbanites with money to burn who want to look trendy. Not so hot for people who actually like Spanish food.
Our meal at Jaleo was amazing. The pinnacle of our night was the seasonal mushrooms in potato cheese sauce; they are absolutely heavenly. All of the other dishes were very well done. That said, the vegetable payaya was a bit salty for my taste. The chocolate mousse for dessert was decent, but the rice pudding is a must-try. Overall an overwhelmingly good dinner.
