As a south european, I enjoy the concept of a caf store where my espresso is served on a ceramic cup rather than on a paper cup. Instead of leaving the place, paper cup in hand, and rushing to get to work, I enjoy sitting at a table and drinking it calmly. I don’t do this often anymore, but if have an extra 20 minutes in the morning I may consider going to Madeleine’s and enjoy such an espresso. There is a problem though, which is the immense amount of good looking cakes that will be displayed right in front of me as I order my coffee. And it’s not like any other coffee store where I stare at donuts and cinnamon rolls as I wait in line – these cakes are amazing and I know that because once I decided to try the Sacher torte for my cheat meal – and that one was the best cheat meal ever. For me, this is also a nice place for studying in the afternoon (I like to do my homework at public places, preferably places that provide caffeinated products). There is more food besides the cakes (the bean soup is gluten free and is very tasty), so this is a good option for lunch as well.

I was very confused about the ordering process when I came in. The menus were a bit tucked away but a very helpful waiter pointed them out and told me to let him know when I had decided what I wanted. He took my order down on a tablet and told me to go to the cashier to pay. There is kind of a hodgepodge of ordering methods. You order sandwiches and they bring them to you but there’s also a buffet style section you can walk down and they’ll give you your soup and you can get pastries and so on. I hadn’t realized this and didn’t actually get my soup when I was supposed to, but no worries! The man who brought my double mocha realized and flagged down some soup for me. Now the important part: the tomato basil soup was amazing, my double mocha was superb, and the turkey brie sandwich was excellent. A bit oniony for my taste, but I had a low tolerance for onions. The atmosphere was nice, I sat near the register so I could watch other people pay so I’d know how to acquire food from here in the future. And the food didn’t cost an arm and a leg, would have been under $10 without coffee

Love breakfast here. I had had many breakfasts at La Madeleine during trips to Bethesda. Usually I have eggs (Parisien Eggs Benedict or hash)m but sometimes oatmeal or a parfait. The croissants and tarts are tasty.Lunch choices I recommed are Quiche Lorraine, Chicken Parisien or just a cup of romato soup w/ bread.Staff has been very friendly to me, but other people say otherwise. Reap what you sow.

Just had two tasty dinner platters, paella with chicken and shrimp and crepes with chicken and a greay sauce. Both about $10 each–good food and good price.

Amazing breakfast place! Delicious kish and cafe a lait creme brule. Definitely one of my favorite places

Adorable, Cheap, and very French. Loved the atmosphere in this place; the wood-paneled walls and cozy low ceiling made me feel like I was in something of an alpine lodge, instead of outside the metro in Bethesda. This cafe is located just a block or two from the Bethesda metro and has a ton of seating with plenty of quiet areas for those who desire them. I had a chocolate almond croissant, which was delicious, as well as an iced mocha, which was rich and substantial. Total was around $6.50, very reasonable considering the high quality of the fare. My one gripe: no wireless internet.

The pastries are not French! Too much sugar and not light enough. The soups and the bread are good. The croque monsieu is pretty good and I love the chicken friand.
