Perfect place for special events!. We hosted my sons rehearsal dinner at the Mexicali Cantina last week. The restaurant was so accommodating and easy to work with. They worked with us to create a customized menu for the evening with a very reasonable price! They were very responsive to all our requests both before and during the event. We were very impressed with Yolani (sp?) and her incredibly professional staff. Not only were they attentive, but they were lively and genuinely happy to serve. Our group of 35 guests had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food. This is some of the best Mexican/Spanish food I have had in the area. I cant say enough good things about the dishes. You must try the Tres Leches! We live an hour away from Frederick, but would not hesitate to come back just to eat a meal at this restaurant. Thank you to the staff of Mexicali!
Favorite for Tex-Mex!. This is my favorite place for Tex-Mex in Frederick. I have a lot of family in Texas and New Mexico and this is as close as I can find to home. Love any of the marinated, grilled flank steak choices!
Hot restaurant getting cold quick. Mexicali has been a favorite of ours since we first moved to Frederick 5 years ago. The food was alway top notch and the service was always prompt and friendly. I remember them having a mariachi band playing the majority of my early trips to the resturaunt. Starting about 8 months ago we noticed some changes for the worse, mainly in service but we continued to patronize, hoping had experienced some bad luck. I believe the manager from tonight was telling us they are under new management. It seems now a days the mariachi band is a thing of the past along with the prompt service and consistently fresh food. Lately going to eat there is a disappointing 2 to 3 hour event with no music. Not that the music is a big deal to me but just another sign of a significant downshift in the once almost perfect Latin atmosphere. Now it is more of a compromised, watered down mexican, slow, sloppy mess. The consistency has disappeared and even the recipes have changed along with the quality in service. My wife often enjoyed the Acapulco steak entree, especially the sauce that accompanied it. This last time we tried them, we noticed the once delicate sherry sauce had been replaced with a thick brown gravy served over top a completely raw steak (ordered med-rare). The shrimp on the platter was also completely under cooked despite waiting 35 minutes to be served. After the length of time we had already waited, along with her appetite pretty much gone after biting into a raw shrimp my wife declined the offer of preparing something else. When we asked about the sauce we were told that yes, they had changed the recipe, all sauces were being made in large batches to be served when needed instead of being made fresh for each order. This essentially kills the best thing this place had going for them. The same thing was done with the seafood cream sauce. The more fresh and delicious version has been replaced with a butter based, old bay infused disappointment. Not sure who they are trying to appeal to. Maybe just trying to cut costs? To try and make it up to us, the manager assured us he would ‘do something on the bill.’ 15 minutes after our plates were cleared we were brought 2 desserts, a nice gesture even though not necessarily something we wanted or were asked about. 15 minutes later still when we finally saw our waitress again, we asked for our bill. It was brought and we were surprised to see the manager had not made good on his promise. At this point we were done. We paid and left, hoping they will get their act together but knowing we won’t be back to find out. R&A
Favorite Mexican in Frederick. Everything is very good here and consistent. The magaritas are strong. Food has excellent flavor. One oddity — their fajitas don’t come with cheese. You have to order it separately. Service can be a bit slow on some days, but generally good.
Super favorite place for Mexican food. Been back many times with different guests and are always happy. Food is exceptional, good service, and very well priced. The cevieche is very fresh and delicious! Everything from the salsa to lomo salteado is great. Check out the Singing Cowboys on Wed. Night. Really fun and not overbearing, they really add a nice element to an already great dining experience!
One of the best Mexican food places in Frederick. If you like this place, try caciques in downtown Frederick
One of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I really enjoy the food at Mexicalli Cantina. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and service is friendly and prompt. I’ve had their steak fajitas, as well as their baked chicken with onions and black beans and rice. I’ve had the paella, which, not quite as good as what I have had in Spain, but still very good. It’s a huge portion with various seafood – enough for leftovers. The margaritas are great too (try the mango flavor). The place is large with three eating areas, so it’s a great place if anyone wants to celebrate a birthday or other event. Prices are reasonable too.
