Excellent Food, Great Value. This unassuming restaurant in Gaithersberg contains an excellent choice for a change of pace from fast food or pizza. The servings are moderately sized with an average meal with a drink costing between $5 – $7. The Salvadoran pupusas are the real attraction. For my first visit the pork, cheese and bean combo was selected. Two patties were piping hot and had just enough dough to make it a toasty treat. A tomato sauce (not spicy) and a jicama slaw were included but were placed in sandwich bags tied in a knot. These are not the most convenient ways to serve food. They do offer jalapeno relish as a side for $0.25, if spice is important to you, be sure to pick some up. After the meal get some horchata in a to-go cup. You can thank me later.
Hidden gem. Dona Azucena has the best papusas in town. It’s definitely a hidden gem–bargain basement prices in a clean, welcoming setting where you can sit as long as you’d like. As soon as you sit down, you’re brought a bowl of curtido (vinegary cole slaw) and weak hot sauce, perfect accompaniments to the papusas. Try each kind of papusa; they are all good. The only wrong note is the tamales, which are soggy, heavy, and not terribly flavorful. If you’re in the mood for papusas, this is the place to go. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the prices can’t be beat.
