Just wondering…. What is the average price for lunch and/or dinner at Savage River Lodge?
Animal lovers – beware. We came here for my bday weekend and I wanted to love this place… The setting is beautiful, the cabins are great, and they appeared to be very animal friendly — which is very important to me — dogs are allowed and welcome, plus great veg options on the menu. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed that the main lodge was decorated with deer corpses and body parts. So, if you are an animal lover who recognizes that all animals’ ability to feel pain and fear should be respected (whether dog or deer), or if you are just not into seeing dead animals strung up on walls, beware. We approached the owner and suggested a more compassionate and progressive decor, but unfortunately he was not receptive (even though the staff was quite understanding!). Too bad – would have been a great place, but as it stands I cannot return there or recommend it.
My wife and I just spent the weekend at SRL. If you’re so inclined, I can’t recommend the accommodations highly enough. The first thing you’ll notice is the quiet, absolute quiet. The cabins are nestled in the woods and arranged so that no one is within eye shot of anyone else. They’re also pet friendly and our Morkie, Samantha ate her weight in canine delicacies. We had two dinners and two breakfast/lunches while we were there and no meal disappointed. As another reviewer noted, the menu is long on quality if slightly short on number of selections. The portions are substantial and several appetizers constituted main course portions. It’s great to see wild game on their menu. Don’t miss the wild game sausage appetizer. They also feature boar, and bison, along with the more domesticated duck and lamb. If you want less exotic fare, no worries. They have it and prepare it with care and a clear understanding of the products they’re working with. They also make use of sweet and savory components with a deft touch but they also know when to let the products shine. The crab cakes are among the best I’ve ever enjoyed and it’s presented with the crab as the star of the show. A citrus Aoli accompanies but sits in the background. They’re also as big as your fist. On the other hand, the sausage sampler is laced with jalapeno and served with apple butter barbecue sauce and pumpkin mustard. That’s a lot going on and it all works. The bar and wine list are first rate and the ambiance of the ski lodge is great. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable for the most part. Some are a little young but they are anxious to learn and do their jobs well.SRL is a little over an hour from us and that makes it difficult to say if we’d drive there for a dinner and drive back. However, I’m certain we’ll be back as it is one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever been.
When I first looked at the menu there really wasn’t anything that jumped out at me and I wondered if we should have gone somewhere else. I ended up ordering the seafood saut and my wife got the Greek pasta and both were absolutely amazing. On top of that, the atmosphere was perfect and the wait staff knowledgable and friendly. The menu is a bit short, but this is certainly a place that is about quality over quantity. We had an amazing time and are already trying to plan a return trip.
