Look Elsewhere. Took my wife and daughter out for Valentines day dinner. Wanted to try a new place so we made a reservation. My daughter and I ordered the Grilled Tavern Steak. I added the Black Chili Small Plate. My wife ordered the Duck Salad. PROs – The steaks were good cuts well prepared. The roasted romanesca was excellent. The charred radicchio salad was fresh with a tasty vinaigrette. CONs – The Black Chili was all pepper with little to no flavor. A true shame as the brisket in the chili was well done but I could not finish it. The parmesan mashed potatoes on both steak plates were lukewarm at best. But the real kicker…after eating about a third of her salad and rooting around for the duck prosciutto, my wife declared there was no duck on her duck salad! No problem, I summoned Andrew our waiter. Instead of correcting the oversight, he insisted that there were people in the back who monitor such things and that we just overlooked it. Huh? Really? I think my wife can distinguish between duck prosciutto and radicchio 10 out of 10 times blindfolded. My wife asked me not to press the issue on Valentines so I let it go…but we also will not be going back.
Foodie Find. People who enjoy quality local ingredients prepared correctly over gobs of cheap food on a plate try this place out. Yes, it’s more expensive than the all you can eat ribs joint down 40, but it’s because you are getting quality over quantity. I’ve been here at least 5 times, and have enjoyed the hanger steak, pork loin, burger, and I appreciate that the kids items are made fresh and not from a frozen bag. It’s really a gem and it’s too bad people around here don’t realize what good food really looks like. It’s high quality local new american with a great beer selection.
Great Beer. Food needs more options. Sat in the bar and got beer tastings. Good variety of beer and staff knew the beer. Atmosphere was nice and airy. Menu needs more options and way to many items have bacon in them. There is more to local sourcing than bacon. Need more healthy items. Would go back in the summer to see what they add to the menu in season
Cynthia. This was our second visit to the restaurant. On our first visit shortly after their grand opening, the service was slow and the food was mediocre at best. We had the vegetable pot pie and there was visible oil running through the filling and it lacked flavor. On our second visit just yesterday, we ordered the cheese board and we got 3 very small pieces of cheese and 4 baguette pieces that could have broken a tooth…! We also had the burger and house salad. There house salad is lettuce with dressing…not much to it. The burger was okay. Given the price point of the restaurant and the limited menu, I would have expected the food to much better! I was so hoping a restaurant like this one could make a go of it in the area.
Nice place. The new owners have certainly done a wonderful job with the dcor. It doesn’t resemble the former Jilly’s at all, which is a good thing! The food choices are interesting, but very limited. At dinner in the bar area, there were no sandwich options. Small plates were very small and pricey. The cornbread was tasty, but serving was small. The burger was ordered medium rare which we were told was the chef’s preference, but arrived medium. It tasted good was a decent size. The caesar salad was ample, but did not come with add on options like shrimp or chicken. The dessert was good. The apple pie with a crust of cheddar cheese was tasty, but apples had skin on them and were tough to chew. I think it is heading in the right direction, but still has some kinks to work out. It is worth a try. The server was attentive and knowledgeable.
Disappointed. The food is overpriced and lacks flavor but the atmosphere is nice. We ordered the burger, wings and fries. The burger was $14, the wings were $12 for 6 of them and a plate of fries was $7. The chef recommended the burger to be cooked mid rare which was fine, but it came out well done. The salad, which was on the same plate as the burger, was nothing but a handful of lettuce. The French fries had absolutely no flavor and since there was no salt and pepper on the table, we had to ask for some. Honestly, the salt didn’t help, and I love fries. The wings were okay , but they were undercooked. We were informed that freerange chicken always looks undercooked. Really? These wings were pink/red inside. It’s a turn off! They only have homemade catsup. It was terrible. It tasted like watered down salsa. If a restaurant is going to have a limited menu like this, everything should be cooked to perfection. I would recommend this place for drinks only.
I’ve got to say.. No offense to the last reviewer, but I couldn’t disagree more! If the glass was dirty, okay, that shouldn’t happen, but ask for another and move on! I really enjoyed my meal here and cannot wait to go back and try brunch.I went with my husband and in-laws the other night. First of all, the tap list is one of the most extensive I’ve seen in the area. A few highlights from the meal: perfect pulled pork sandwich on Atwater’s bun, smoked brisket, perfectly cooked burger, and hearty paprikash. Appetizers included mushroom fritters (loved the spice kick!) and poutine (gravy and gouda over fries yummm). The desserts were classic with a twist.. Not just bread pudding, but chocolate bread pudding with just enough salted caramel. Not just apple pie, but apple pie with a cheddar cheese crust. Aside from the food being so good, I love that every ingredient is local and made from scratch. I asked our waitress a bit more about this, and she said the chef actually went around and visited farms in the area in order to find the best food and make partnerships with real farmers instead of huge distributors. Very cool!I’ll review again once I’ve tried brunch, but I definitely recommend this place for a casual yet quality dinner.
