This was just another average Chinese restaurant. The dumplings were good but other that nothing else stood out. Other dishes are just your average Chinese affair. foodiemuggles.com
This is a very nondescript strip-center store front with excellent food and bargain prices!!Our large group arrived in parts which didn’t pose a problem for the restaurant. The early arrivals ordered 1 order of Mama’s Special Dumplings and 1 order of the Vegetable Tripe Dumplings. The Mama’s were excellent – firm, flavorful filling while the Vegetable were a bit mushy due to the soft tofu filling but both dumplings were well worth the cost given that each order includes 8 dumplings. We ordered 6 dishes for 8 diners – Tasty Tofu (special), Tasty Chicken (special), Crispy Beef (special), Salt & Pepper Chicken, Cumin Pork and Mama’s Beef Noodle Soup. The dishes arrived in waves which worked well by allowing us to finish the dishes and have them cleared rather than crowding the table. The Salt & Pepper Chicken and Tasty Tofu were excellent – the flavors were spectacular and the tofu (fried) had a crispy exterior with a firm interior. Both dishes had mountains of dried red chili peppers and yet they flavor was NOT hot. The Crispy Beef was also quite good – sweet and crispy but not overly fried. The Cumin Pork was good but not as much of a stand-out as the other entrees. The Tasty Chicken, also fried, had a sweet sauce rather than the red chili peppers. I didn’t try the soup but had multiple reports that it was very tasty with a nice selection of home-made noodles. All told – this is quite a hidden gem. We’ll be back again!!
Wonderful soup and dumplings!
China Bistro Cured My Cold. I love love love this place. I pretty much ordered what the Washingtonian recommended in their cheap eats review. They were right on. The shrimp and chive dumplings are sooo good and comforting. 12 large dumplings come in an order for under 10 bucks. I could easily eat these once a week, maybe more. Also, their cold noodle salad is amazing. It has soft noodles contrasted by crunchy bean spouts, sesame seeds, tons of garlic, and spicy chili oil. I think this is what knocked out my cold. There was a little too much garlic for me on top, so I just took it off. Also, the chili oil is on the side, so you can add as much or as little as you want. They have lots of little cold plates on display for around $2.00. I got the pickled cucumber, which was nicely cooling with all the spice I was eating. When picking up my food I noticed that they had many specials and other pickled items. The place is small and a little chaotic, but that kinda adds to its charm. If you only get one thing, get the dumplings. My husband got the General Tso’s which was good, but not special like the dumplings.
Haven’t tried the dumplings, but really great chinese food in general. I haven’t tried the dumplings- I’m not a super adventurous chinese food lover- but the typical Chinese fare at this restaurant is stellar quality. I’ve had a few things here and they’ve all been delicious- sweet & sour and General Tso’s chicken have nice, juicy white meat chicken; won-ton is delicious- I highly recommend!1/2010- Okay. I tried the dumplings. I have been won over. They are so, so good on a cold day with some hot tea & dumping sauce. I’m pretty sure they’d be good any time, any place though. Amazing.
