Not up to Nigerian standards. I enjoy eating cuisines that are rarely seen, which includes sub-Saharan African in most of the places where I’ve lived. It’s relatively easy to find Ethiopian and North African restaurants if one goes to any semi-cosmopolitan city. Where I am in Australia, Sudanese refugees have opened up a scattering of eateries, plus there are South African barbecue joints galore. (Not just Nando’s.)For as many expatriates as Nigeria sends around the globe, though, they don’t often do restaurants. There were a couple I tried where I used to live in Vancouver, Canada. At pot lucks in hospitals where I’ve worked, Nigerian nurses occasionally bring in their home-style food. So I’ve had some experience with it. That’s why I was eager to try Jolloff Etc. when I came to visit my daughter, who lives near this place. My excitement was quenched after one visit, though. The spicing and quality of the food were awful. I had the fufu with goat meat and spinach. There was WAY too much thick hide and gristle on the goat pieces. I KNOW its goat, so I wasn’t expecting melt-in-my-mouth, but still… I liked the spicing on the spinach, which was nicely hot, but it had too much vinegary tang. The fu-fu had an interesting sour taste from its fermenting. There was too much of it, though (I guess it’s hard to make just a LITTLE fu-fu) and I left most of it behind. My daughter and her boyfriend don’t have the same zest for spicy-hot food as I do, so they were put off by the chicken with jolloff rice they ordered. Even I wasn’t keen on the rice — too acrid a flavour. Jolloff was out of a lot of items when we came there, and the place smelt of fish. I see from their Facebook page that they’ve gone to a buffet style set-up, so maybe they’ve upper their game, but I’m still not inclined to give them another go next time I’m in the Northern Hemisphere.
