Not your typical Chinese restaurant in the US. It is more authentic. Nice flavors, excellently prepared. If you are looking for Chinese takeout that is all too commonplace, then this is is not it. This place is different and worth it.
Better than most, more expensive than most. Compared to your average neighborhood Chinese joint, Jesse Wong’s Asean Bistro offers a more interesting selection of food at significantly higher prices. Midway between the usual Americanized Chinese and the more authentic places (Grace Garden, Hunan Taste and others), Asean Bistro offers a quiet, calm oasis with very good service. And higher prices.Anyway, red Sauced wontons were fine, in a complex chili oil sauce that was so good we kept the extra sauce for later. Vegetables in soothing lettuce wrap were an abundant heap, not much in the way of spice, similar to the appetizer PF Chang’s made famous. Soft shell crab in spicy black bean sauce was, at best, medium hot, though we asked for extra spicy. XO chicken was also a huge portion, also medium spicy despite the request for extra spice, flavorful (though lacking in XO flavor). Drinks were strong; all seemed to be rum and fruit juices in different combinations. With a Groupon the price was reasonable. But without that, a weekday dinner for two would have been $68 before tip, a bit steep with so many excellent, cheaper Asian options around.
