Best ethiopian food!. I’ve been searching for the best ethiopian in the DC area, and this is it. My boyfriend and I got one of their house combinations, and everything was fantastic. It’s a charming little restaurant, worth the trek out of downtown DC.
Relaxed Atmosphere, Full Flavour. Went back after a few years, and I found it was still as good as I expected. The azeffa appetizer is more generous than you think it is. One order would have been sufficient for our table of six, but we ate two plates because it was just so good. The combination dishes are also generous, so with how filling injera tends to be, try to pace yourself. I ordered the Chista Special because of the variety of small dishes (and because I love raw dishes) and had to ask for a box!If you want traditional seating, enter the downstairs dining room for the lower tables and chairs; Western-height seating is upstairs. I would actually recommend the lower tables for those unaccustomed to eating with their hands because they keep you leaned forward, making you less likely to drip on yourself. The waitstaff definitely don’t rush you, so expect to be able to make an evening of it. Try the coffee with goat’s milk–it’s as creamy as drinking chocolate.
I’ve gotten to do some backpacking in Africa and I can tell you it’s a pretty authentic little place. The food is really good and the tent on top is great in the summer. Its a nice breeze. I took a big group of friends from out of town there once and had a great time. In most African cultures eating isn’t something rushed, so don’t expect your usual speedy American service. So if the staff seems to be taking there time remember your not at McDonalds. Also I encourage you to eat with your hands (good etiquette dictates the right hand) if you want to be really authentic. You can use the bread to pick up the meat and soak up the sauce. It may mean getting your hands a little dirty (and maybe the table) but it makes for a fun meal with friends and definately a fun date. But there’s always silverware too if your less adventurous.
Never going back again!!!!. Okay so this was our first time trying the ethiopian cusine, i chose this place cuz of the sum what positive reviews i read online, however, it was one of our worst dining experiences evr!! I am not sayin I am not going to try the ethiopian cuisine again, but never addis ababa again!!First of all, the place is shabby!! yes the tables were not even wiped!! yuck!Secondly, the service here sucks!!! we had to wait like 15 minutes to place the order- then to get our main-course- the forgetful waitress forgot our appetizers!!! Then we had to wait for 20 to get our check omg!!! And tht too whn the whole place was basically EMPTY, its painful! The maincourse- i like their ingera bread and the lamb tibs- but the tibs wer essentially RAW! DO NOT try the chicken entree- it was flavourless!!!The best thing about the whole meal were the appetizers- saumosa!! which the waitress brought AFTER our main-course!!! haha, funny place i tell you….
Sunday lunch buffet, With carnivore dreams of eating a big pile of Tibs to carry me through the day, I got there 1st in line, They opened the tops for me down the line. The spicy beef dish was mixed with the pancake / crepe pieces, sparse raisin size pieces of beef. In two large scoops I probability netted a tablespoon. The large drumsticks with whole eggs in thick beriberi sauce was tasty, but didnt know if Taking all the chicken would be rude. Good selection of veggies.Where is the spell check here?
