So mofongin’ good!. My daughter knows I’m a food fanatic who’s always in search of something I haven’t tried before. Lucky for me, she inherited a bit of my mania, and she lives near D.C, with all its ethnic cuisine wonders. When I came up from Australia on holiday, she was keen to turn me on to something she had eaten where she grew up in Miami, but that I had never tried — mofongo. If you’re reading this, you probably already know that that’s a mound of chopped plantains seasoned with garlic and meat, usually pork. Mofongo is a signature dish of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. They apparently argue over who invented the dish. La Casa del Mofongo is one of those great ethnic places that foodies like me are always dying to find. It’s not flash inside, but the dining room (on a grubby stretch of Georgia Avenue not far from the Beltway) is bright and clean. There’s enough Caribbeanalia to give it an island vibe, but it’s not tacky. Our waitress was courteous enough to explain the mofongo to us — good service! More importantly, the dining area was full of Puerto Rican/Caribbean people. That’s always a good sign in an ethnic joint — when people from that culture are eating there. The mofongo was speckled with pork cracklings throughout, which my daughter thought were too hard, but I liked ’em. Then again, I’ve got teeth like a dingo’s. The garlic flavour was deep and rich. I ordered the pork accompaniment, which had a garlicky, peppery spice coating. It put me in mind of Filipino adobo, only better. This is not a high-tone Michelin star place, but if you want a top-notch take on a style of food you don’t find every day, La Casa del Mofongo is worth a go.
