It’s not everyday that you come across a Burmese restaurant, so wanted to come to this place for a long time. First thing we ordered was green tea leaf salad because who knew you could make salad with green tea leaf. I must say that though it was not my favorite but I still enjoyed it. It had that slightly bitter leafy flavor which was very unique.Plus I liked all the crispy bits on top. I might not order it again but I will still recommend first timers to try it out as it’s something very different. For entree we got dark meat chicken cooked in some onion based curry over basmati rice and Thick Noodles mixed with curried chicken strips , onion, cabbage, and fresh cilantro tossed with burmese dressing and topped with fried onion and carrot strips(Nanjee Thoke). We had asked for spicy and this place surely delivered on that. The chicken gravy thing (sunday special) was kind of similar to Indian food and being Indians ourselves we enjoyed the familiar flavors. Our favorite thing was possibly the noodles which had different textures and flavors. For dessert we were torn between Shweji and coconut ice cream. And though the coconut ice cream looked beautiful we went for shweji. The shewji was very good. It was like a cake/pudding type of thing and it came hot , right out of the oven. We liked it so much that we plan on trying to remake it at home. One more thing worth mentioning is that the service was very fast. The food came out really quickly. Overall good experience. foodiemuggles.com
I went with my friend after hearing rave views for the place, though we were a bit startled to be the only customers in the restaurant. We ordered samosas and beers as we decided what to order. The samosas were so so, but I suppose that was due to our preferences. We ordered the shrimp and vegetable tomato-coconut curry with rice, which was extremely tasty. The curry itself was rich in flavor and the shrimp was fresh. My only wish was that the prices were cheaper for the relatively small portion sizes.
We loved our food (especially the coconut ice cream served in a coconut) however the server (big guy) was very rude.
A favorite worth a trip to MD. Without a doubt this is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I always try something interesting for an entree, their green papaya salads are very nearly divine, and they are extremely veggie friendly. If you ask for the vegetarian version of a dish they ask if you would also like the fish sauce removed too. Good food and good service, go there now!
Only okay. I have never quite understood the popularity of this restaurant, for I have found many of the dishes to be rather repetitious of one another. Most dishes, albeit exotic in nationality, seem rather humdrum in conception and flavor. One of my favorite dishes in this cuisine is the tealeaf salad; have the version at Burma Road Restaurant in Gaithersburg–it’s much better. Also having encountered unexpected rudeness from theMandalay management, even though at the time (in its College Park incarnation) I had been a frequent customer, added to my dislike of this place.
The service at Mandalay is very poor. My waiter seemed to have an attitude and it took atleast 10 minutes to get our water glasses filled after we were seated. Then we had to wait a long time for him to come back and take our orders. That was the tone for the night, if we wanted something we had to stop another waiter and have them get our waiter. But what made me decide to never come back is after I received the check the waiter disappeared again, I saw him in the front of the restaurant and I approached him with the check and my payment and he told me to go back to my seat. I have never seem such poor service and complete disregard for a customer. I have no complaints about the food.
Best Ethnic Cuisine in DC Area. Mandalay is my second favorite ethnic restaurant in the DC area, after Burma, Mandalay’s sister restaurant near the Verizon Center. Delicate and unusual spices, reminiscent of Thai but more balanced, tastier.
