Uncommon Salvadorean cuisine. Even though this is a pupuseria, those involuted pizzas of masa, meat and cheese were not what impressed me most about El Comalito. Not that the pupusas were bad — they were decent-sized, tasty and cheap — $1.50 each. But it was other items, ranging from meaty platters to some of the unusual drinks, that stick out in my mind. For instance, El Comalito’s horchata was not white and bland like the Mexican version of this beverage — it was pinkish brown and had a pleasant herbaceous edge to the flavour. I had French-fried yucca with my fried pork chunks (the latter were overdone and tough.) I don’t care much for yucca — it’s a bland starch-fest in most cases — but the yuca frita chunks were great. El Comalito makes use of loroco, which is a wild flower used in Salvadorean cuisine, in several of its dishes. I don’t recall seeing that on the menus at other El Sal spots I’ve seen. This place is bright and clean inside, plus it’s cheap. Less than $2 for a lot of the appetizers, main plates in the $10 range. We hit it at lunchtime on a weekday and service was quick. It stuck me as authentic and fresh. I’d come back, if I didn’t live on the other side of the continent.
