(6/7/2015) Got the Crab Cake Platter and Maryland Crab Soup for lunch. Ocean Pride has been around over 40 years. Strangely, there’s not much buzz about the place, it’s not one of those must visit kind of places. Interior is dark, old wood, tiled, kind of like a crab shack dropped off the side of the beltway on a commercial strip. Had the crab cake fried, really, the only way to go to get a nice golden brown crust. The 4 oz. cake was moist (touch cool, i.e. uncooked, in the middle), bound with mayo and bread crumbs, seasoned with Old Bay and paprika, full of large, blindingly white lumps, with that bland, sort of indistinct mildness, likely from Venezuelan blue crabs; only condiment was a fresh squeeze of lemon. For the price of the platter, $16.99, it was fine, tasty enough. I guess I didn’t feel like vegetables on this day, got Deviled Eggs and Potato Salad as my two sides. Eggs were creamy, but don’t-even-bother bland. Potato Salad was made from waxy Red Bliss, lots of sourness from white vinegar and dill pickle relish, maybe had a stray parsley sprig. Maryland Crab Soup was full of stuff: frozen succotash mix (I hate lima beans), fresh chunks of celery and a little unusually, green cabbage. The base was stewed tomatoes and their juices, the right consistency for me (I don’t like it when it’s unusually thickened). There aren’t too many crab houses in Timonium, so not much by way of competition.
