(10/1/2016) Went to check out Truffle Butta Bistro with a friend (who had been there before). Truffle Butta Bistro is minority-owned. It has a vibrant vibe packed into a microscopic space (love the bright orange walls!), conversation and music are energetic and loud. By contrast, we walked by another bistro on the same corner just up the street, Bread and Circuses, you peek in the window and it’s the Talbot’s set (white, old money), white tablecloths and votives. Baltimore is a funny place, physically and spiritually segregated still, no matter how we try to gloss it over, still, in this day and age. There was a rainbow of colors with us in Truffle Butta (black, white, Asian). They have a weekend brunch menu that changes seasonally and even weekly. Menu is a little Southern, a little Creole, and a lot of soul food. Like a crow with a shiny object, I was drawn to the soft shells, probably should have known better, it’s off-season and I believe these were from frozen. The crust on them was excellent, though, was flaky, highly seasoned (with a Creole-style mix), and they were nicely deep-fried and served with dainty dollops of Thai sweet chili sauce with a drop of habanero puree. The sides were a quick saute of bagged baby spinach, vibrant green, touch of lemon juice, and home fries (I subbed for the Lemon Zest Mashed Potatoes). Likely home fries were pre-fired and held warm, no great crust but some very well-browned white potato cubes, uneven chunks of boiled sweet potatoes (not browned, likely used for the mash for the Sweet Potato Waffles), and quartered frozen Brussels sprouts, with sauteed yellow onion slivers. It was all right, but I probably would go for another starch next time. The Salmon and Shrimp Cajun Pasta was a filet of seared salmon and shrimp served over penne dressed in a Creole-seasoned Alfredo sauce, presented simply, no garnishes. We were warmly welcomed, and well taken care of, service was very friendly, Chef Raymond came out an chatted for a moment. Prices were on par with that other place up the street, it’s not cheap eats. It’s BYOB, in case you wanted to know. It’s a cute spot, they’re eager to please, would stop in again if I was up this way and had a little time to spare.
