Inadequate space, inadequate service. Tiny restaurant has a good sushi chef, but entrees are subpar. Disorderly and slow service. Increasingly shabby decor.17 Oct, 2011Tiny one waiter restaurant decked out like a small Japanese cottage. One of the rare sushi places run by Japanese people. It shows in the authenticity of the menu and the quality of the food.
Great for dinner. I really enjoy this small authentic Japanese restaurant. This place was recommended from a friend of mines so I went with a friend to this place for dinner. It’s really small inside but if you go during late hours it may not be as packed. The sushi is just fantastic at this place. Your really get what you pay for. It’s somewhat expensive but the quality is high. I recommend the futo and spicy tuna maki rolls 🙂 That night I also had unagi and a glass of Kirin. You may feel rushed somewhat the first time but if you go again you may feel more comfortable. Atleast that’s what I’ve felt. If you want a good meal I would suggest trying out this place.
First Visit – Not My Last!!. I stopped in for lunch today, after reading so many positive reviews. I was not disappointed! It is a tiny place and every table was taken, but luckily there was one seat available at the counter. I ordered the Sashimi which included: salmon, tuna, yellowtail, bass, mackerel, fluke, crab and a couple more I can’t recall. Every bite was super fresh and delicious. The Miso soup was very tasty, and I couldn’t finish the huge bowl of sticky rice. A nice, varied menu assures variety and I’m looking forward to trying many more offerings. No complaints about the service.
I love this place – intimate, reasonably priced, good service and great food! It is a little embarrassing how often I go. Also, they have the best miso soup around. Love the spicy tuna roll, the gyoza, and the salmon teriyaki!
Hidden Gem. Looking from the outside it is unassuming. The inside is a little cramped as well. But the food and price make these cosmetic issues a non-factor. After you have their food, you’re kind of glad that the place isn’t more attractive because then you won’t have to wait for a table as long. Large parties are not possible, but if you’re willing, take out is a fine option, even for the sushi. The staff and owner, who presumably is the sushi chef, are friendly and accommodating. Consider yourself lucky if you live around Arlington.
The place is small, but the food’s worth the wait. Polite, efficient staff, including a truly excellent sushi chef. I’ve never had a bad or disappointing meal at Toraya. If you’re adventurous, make sure to check the chalkboard for the daily specials; they’re always seasonal, authentic (read: slightly scary to the gaijin palate!) and delicious.
Toraya is very simply the best sushi in the area, bar none. The restaurant is extremely small and the wait can be long, but defintely worth it. Try the Crunchy Maki and you’ll be hooked. Service is sometimes hit or miss and the non-sushi entrees are only average, but the sushi keeps you coming back for years.
