I came here for the second time after having an amazing first time experience here on my last trip to Boston with a friend. This time I wanted to show my husband how amazing this place was. It was perfect as they had Flamenco Sundays and would add to our romantic date. We ordered five plates between the two of us and I really have to say that the food has gone way way down. The arancinis weren’t even crunchy. Some of our plates were overcooked and soggy. It wasn’t satisfying at all and for the price… well, it just wasn’t worth it. We passed on dessert. What a disappointment after years of talking up this place to my husband. Sorry, but I won’t be recommending this place anymore to friends visiting Boston.
Prior visits, to both the bar and the restaurant, were actually pretty good, but this place seems to have gone into a decline. On a quiet Monday night, our food was mostly room temperature and didn’t taste very fresh – the pork tenderloin was like leather, the cheese ravioli with wild blueberries was just odd, and the rabbit was gummy. I will say that the sangria remained quite good, and that is something that is hard to find in Boston, where most places serve sickeningly sweet syrupy versions. There are much better tapas options out there, from the rustic Estragon to the quirky/young Tasca to the elegant and fashionable Barcelona.
Disappointed. Start off with disinterested hostess on her cell phone while manning the front station. A fairly Americanized menu with not too much in the way of traditional tapas. Inconsistent food preparation. Lamb chops came out raw, and the filet came out in two thin over cooked slices. Sauces that should have been worlds apart were just about the same but one with a little bit of blue cheese somewhere melted into it. Had about 5 or 6 items at our table and none of them impressed. Seems like the kind of place that caters to 20 something hipsters that want to pretend they’ve been to a tapas bar.
Amazing food !!!! Tortilla espanola, excellent very authentic ! Can’t wait to go back!!
Great tapas, even better drinks. I visited with a few co-workers on a Thursday night. This place was PACKED, and for good reason! The outside seating is very cozy, and the varieties of tapas are very tasty. Make sure to ask the excellent bar staff to create one of their signature cocktails. Next time I’m in Boston, I will visit Barlola again, for sure!
Good tapas, not great.. Just off Newbury on Commonwealth this downstairs tapas bar was value for money. I don’t live in Boston and imagine there are better tapas to be had, but this is fine. Excellent salad and a handful of cold tapas, but the line up of hot is pretty typical. Enjoyed the tenderloin with Cabrales, very reasonably priced wine and sangrias, and the chicken croquettes. Didn’t care for their heavy flan. Decent place for a date. Very lively bar area. Would I go again? Doubt it, since there are so many other great dining venues for us out-of-towners to sample. Am I upset with my choice? Not at all, competent without being notable.
