Important: Japonaise no longer sells donuts. After a long walk in search of fried dough, I was slightly disappointed. However, the pastries are delicious enough to warrant the trip. My tasty Azuki Cream was a sweetened croissant filled with whipped cream and bean paste dusted in powdered sugar. They have a large selection of frozen yogurt and summer drinks that also looked refreshing.
Excellent cakes. Ugly decor.. Japonaise Bakery is an enigma. They make excellent, albeit pricey cakes and pastries. However, their Brookline location is disturbingly grubby, with dirty floors, dirty, tired fixtures, scarred walls and scabby furniture. It makes no sense.
An pan. If I’ve had a bad day, I stop at Japonaise and pick up an An Pan (sweet bun filled with red bean paste). Nothing is more delicious and uplifting for under $2. Take it to go though.
