One and a Half Stars Sandwich Bar. Ten dollars should buy you a pretty exceptional sandwich; but All Stars no longer delivers the goods. Although most of the stuff is made on the premises, that doesn’t mean it is very good. Bread is dry and tasteless, stuffings are mediocre and bland, meat is not quite fresh-tasting and toppings lack much flavor. The fries are sodden and flaccid. Service is desultory and depressed. Kind of played out – like a party that has gone on long past midnight, and you missed the fun time. What’s worse is the music, specially selected by the wooden-eared owner, it is a kind of techno/party mix that is like an externalized migraine, or that horrible 15 minutes between episodes of upchucking. Anyway, All Star Sandwich Bar looks ready for the restaurant boneyard. It’s sell-by date has expired, it’s pop-up timer has melted and it’s parrot appears to be late. With so many good alternatives in the area there is no good reason to go there.12 Dec, 2010Pretty freakin’ good… very noisy.. All Star makes exceptionally good sandwiches. Good bread, great flavored mayonnaises, toppings and fillings. This is robust, fatty, flavorful food. Their appetizers are innovative and very toothsome. I don’t like their fries much – too starchy, overcooked and greasy. The place is really hopping, tables are jammed very close and the noise can be migraine-inducing. Service is friendly although they seem to have a little trouble getting through the tight spaces. Sandwiches are not cheap, but definitely worth it.
