Rudderless and inept. Gran Gusto started out great, began to slip and now is a near-disaster. A few hints of greatness still remain – superb grilled calimari and octopus, good homemade pasta. But the service is bad – it is slow and the waitstaff is showy and bickering. The bread is stale, the salads tasteless and sour, the entrees an array of good ingredients ruined by poor preparation. Pizza is sodden with grease and the overall impression is of sourness in the crust and sauce. Gran Gusto represents a sad fall from grace for a small artisan-sized restaurant, but it is also a big waste of money at this point. Don’t bother going.03 Feb, 2010Wonderful food…. but slipping.. Gran Gusto has always had superb Italian food; wonderful dishes such as wood grilled calamari and baby octopus, branzino, duck with a port wine reduction, as well as pizze and house-made pasta. But in the past few months I have noted a real slippage. What was once a tightly-run house now seems rudderless and dysfunctional. Food quality, while still high, has dropped a notch and service is uncoordinated and inattentive. Morale seems lower. Strong management is clearly lacking.
We had made reservations on line and when we got there we were informed that there was a kitchen problem. They were not opening for 90 minutes! We did come back and had a very nice meal. Homemade pasta, delicious lasagne, wonderful desserts as well Appetizer of grilled calamari was superb, nice smoky flavor. Tender, not chewy. Fresh mozzarella appetizer was great.
Take Out. I notice a few people like this restaurant. I don’t know if is better if you eat in. I ordered a dish that had rigatoni and ground sausage with mushrooms. Yuck…it was a cup of rigatoni with some watered down sausae and mushrooms, it was obvious that they didn’t drain the rigatoni. As I was carrying my dish out, I said to myself this is very light, so I opened it before I got home and couldn’t believe what was inside. I had an aluminum plate with about a cup of cooked raviioli and about 3oz of sausage and mushrooms. I was so angry and I went back into the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager. I said for $20.00 this is what I get? He kept stating the rigatoni was imported from Italy. I was like what, this tasted just like the prince rigatoni that you get at Shaw’s. How could he tell somebody that has travelled to Italy that this was from Italy , it tasted like Prince to me. Well you know what that means for me, never again and I wouldn’t even waste my time recommending it to somebody or even sitting down for a meal. First impressions are last impressions.
