I first came to Boston in 2001 and an old friend said we had to eat at Mary Chung. I thought it was the best Chinese food I’d ever had. Time hasn’t been kind, because this was just awful. The chicken and broccoli had absolutely no flavor, no spice, nothing. Very disappointing.

Dreadful Beyond Words. We weren’t expecting great. We were hungry and tired and just hoped for some solid Chineese comfort food. What we got was bad, bordering on inedable. Crab Rangoon was over stuffed and not crispy, hot and sour soup was neither hot, nor sour…just vinegary, and the Orange Beef had no orang flavor and no spicienessor depth of flavor. It DID have big chunks of blackened and charred orange and it WAS peppery… to the point of being offensive. To add insult to injury, it all arrived at our table Luke warm and at the same time. If you’re on Mass Ave and you come to Mary Chung, just hurry on past.

Stick the fork in… its done.. Once one of the culinary gems of Cambridge, Mary Chung is a seedy remnant of its former self. Its once carefully cooked regional dishes are now prepared with the careless obliviousness of an untalented demoralized and indifferent kitchen. I can think of no reason to go back. Not the inflated bill, the fatty latex-tough meats, the overcooked, listless vegetables, the sloppy, one-dimensional use of spice and flavorings or the disturbing pretense of greatness still clung to by its staff. Mary Chung is an empty rusted hulk, floating on a sea of oil, salt and gristle, overdue for a trip to the wrecker’s yard.
