Stepping down the dark stairs toward the restaurant, I already feel hipper. Graffiti and bright colors decorate the walls and exposed pipes of the underground space. It’s a Friday night, and the 2 of us are seated right away at one of the last open tables.Get a sake slush and get ready. Not sure you’ll like this tropical, alcoholic mixture? The super-smiley server will slip you a sample. And then you’ll order one and get the best kind of brain freeze. The alcoholic kind. The pineapple slush is made with coconut soda, pineapple juice, and just enough sake to keep you satisfied. In addition to the large menu, the server lists off 3-4 daily specials. So many choices! From the specials, we ordered the shishito peppers, which she claimed were mostly sweet, but you may just bite into one in about 20 that’s hot. Lucky for us, one of the fiery ones landed on our plate! The waitress was very helpful in answering all of our questions and suggesting the appropriate amount of food to share (1 large and 3 small dishes was a great amount for the 2 of us). My only complaint with the experience is nit-picky, but what’s up with your bathroom, NM? I felt like I was locked in a cold coffin. Hold your pee if you can, patrons. From the regular menu, the 3 cup chicken was tender in a somewhat sweet sauce, served with a bowl of rice. It was tasty but nothing I hadn’t had before. The Chinese fish fry was savory, slightly chewy, and served in a tin can over seaweed and rice. Very interesting presentation and flavor! The kaya toast was super sweet and coconutty. It was a fun, unique experience to dip this in poached egg. I recommend saving at least a bite of this for last, so you can end your meal on a sweet note!
