We went to S&S all the time when we lived here. It has been a long time (2001) and I am happy to say we enjoyed it very much this trip.

Great bagels and matzah ball soup!

Overrated is an understatement.. Do you love Denny’s but wish they had higher prices? Well, then, S & S is the place for you. I have been to this establishment on 3 separate occasions and have been underwhelmed each time. Everything I have ordered has been bland and lukewarm, from the omelet with havarti and mushrooms (the havarti was congealed, and I am not sure how they managed to make the omelet so uniformly lukewarm throughout, but am convinced it is a miracle of modern science) to the roast beef sandwich. The service is slow, the food is bland and mediocre, and it’s overpriced for what it is. This place should not be a restaurant. It should be the dining hall of a retirement home. And even then, I think my grandmother would want to go elsewhere. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, skip this place–don’t waste your money. Go to All-Star Sandwich Bar instead.

Resting on its laurels. Once a real deli, the S&S is now a kind of imitation of one. The food is varies from okay to not good. Maybe because the cooks are from central America there is no longer a sense of connection to deli culture. The matzo ball soup is still pretty good. The decor is cheery and comfortable. Best stick with chicken wings and breakfast items.

Thanks, Ma. Ma Edleston is everywhere in this place – in photos, painted on the wall near the door. It’s a cozy but large deli that has a large menu, and rarely disappoints, no matter what they make. The chicken wings are very good, but so is the stuffed chicken breast, the Monte Christo Sandwiches and the Veal Parmigiana. There’s nothing to soothe a person than the motherly caress of their potato knishes with chicken gravy. Blintzes are satisfying, as are Caesar Salads with shrimp or chicken. Get the feeling there’s a lot to try? There is. The only thing I find missing (and can never figure out why they omitted it) is Cream Soda. After all, when you are chowing down on some deliciousness chopped liver, or perhaps bagel and lox on some lazy Sunday afternoon with the New York Times and all the time in the world, a Cream Soda would be the right beverage, wouldn’t it? I’ll forgive them this. S&S will have been around a century in a few years. Here’s to an institution, started by a quintessential Jewish Mother, complete with stern expression.PS: We had my wedding rehearsal dinner at S&S, and I still remember it fondly. It was almost like having 35 people at home with us.

The best wings?. Ever since I was a little girl we came here for wings. I have never tried anything else; never needed to. Hey- they do them right.

We are not sure why everyone keeps on coming to this place as their food is OK. Their best feature is that they tend to have brunch or be open at odd hours. Maybe that is it?
