Strike Out!. TW Food began as a pathbreaking locavorian restaurant. I had a great first meal there. But after my third, I am calling it out. It is not enough to have technique, the chef has to have good taste. He/She has to know what to serve how to make it work well. TW may have trained chefs but it no longer produces a good meal. And at their prices, the meal should be close to great. STRIKE ONE: The food ranges from decent but ill conceived, through bland, to terrible. Hake is an inferior white fish. If you are going to serve it, it needs a vibrant sauce to make up for its blandness and bad texture. TW did not succeed. A wild-mushroom crepe looked bad and tasted stringy and tough. A wild mushroom sauce on whole wheat pasta tasted gritty and briny, like knorr mushroom soup mix had been poured over sandy pasta. Yuck! The rest of the meal did not get better than acceptable. STRIKE TWO: Service was intrusive and unprofessional, with interruptive (sic) waiters who did not know how to act discreetly or professionally. STRIKE THREE: Poor menu choices. A restaurant where prices per entree hover around $30 should not serve insipid whitefish, nor mushrooms that are far past their prime. A once innovative menu is now lacking in appeal or balance.
