The food was OK. Nothing really wowed me. A disappointment as we had traveled from NYC to have my husband’s birthday dinner here with friends. The antipasto plate was decent, but not amazing. My seared potato gnocchi were good, but nothing like I was hoping for. thedisabledfoodie.com

Disappointing inaugural. Last night was the first get together of several friends who wanted to meet somewhere in Dorchester for dinner. I have to say, Tavolo was quite disappointing. Service was slow (over an hour for food to come from the kitchen), our waitress never came to the table to update us on our order or checked on the table to see if we needed anything once our food did come (one diner needed salt and eventually had to go find it herself), and the food was mediocre (squash puree was too gummy, dinner was warm, not hot, and not nearly enough capers in the chicken picante). Brussel sprout appetizer was good. Could have done with just that and this would be a different review. My dining group will not be returning to Tavolo.

Exceptional!. Had dinner last night at Tavalo. Normally I stick with the Tagliatelle Bolognese or select a steak, but at my partner’s suggestion I had the pork. It was amazing, cooked to perfection and incredibly full of robust flavor. Our wine was a perfect accompaniment and really brought out the rich flavors of the pork. The restaurant was quite busy and our service started off slightly on the slow side, but our waiter was excellent. We have dined at Tavalo on several occasions and I always leave from the experience feeling like money was well spent.

True Italian without the Attitude. This soaring and beautiful space, carved out of a section of Dorchester undergoing gentrification in fits and starts, speaks to the commitment of its owners, who also own Ashmont Grille down the street. We stopped in last night courtesy of a Gilt City voucher, but with prices so low, and so many excellent specials like their Pasta Night menu (better than Restaurant Week!) you don’t need to clip coupons to enjoy a sumptuous Italian meal for half what you’d pay in other neighborhoods, plus they have convenient off-street free parking for the car folk.We launched our meal with two shared starters – a mildly flavored watermelon, feta, and frisee salad which is perfect for summertime. Chunks of marinated sweet melon contrasting with salty feta and slightly bitter greens. Alongside this was their ‘Spreaders’, ramekins of white bean puree and luscious whipped lemony ricotta with toast points for spreading. Our pasta course was also shared, a large dish of house-made thick tagliatelle noodles with a rich and slightly sweet (nutmeg? cinnamon?) ragu of bolognese. My main course was something I don’t normally order: brined boneless pork chop, thin and juicy and just perfectly pink on a bed of creamy cheese polenta and sauteed broccoli rabe. Service was unusually fast and efficient but also warm, our young waitress took time to explain each course and seemed quite friendly. I’d love to come back with a group of friends to try their different pizzas, especially since the acoustics favor easy conversation.

Food is amazing but it’s too bad I couldn’t it get it when or how I wanted it. PS Dear bartender, you’re nice, however, you could be more spirited.
