Thoroughly Romantic. We had been to the previous occupant of this striking and upscale space but had been underwhelmed by the flat flavors and dull cuisine. This newly reincarnated restaurant retains the beautiful space and terrific service, but adds some pretty adventurous and creative food, along with a cloyingly sweet cocktail menu aimed squarely at the Sex-in-the-City girls. Since it was Valentine’s Day, they were offering a tightly written prix-fixe menu, two options each for appetizers and entrees followed by a single dessert choice. I opted for the butter-poached lobster with passion fruit vinaigrette and frozen coconut mousse, each flavor note standing brightly on its own but also playfully interacting together. The portion was rather unusually generous for a simple appetizer but I wasn’t complaining. My main course was one of my favorites of all time, the rarely seen roasted monkfish, richly accented with black caviar (the real thing) and a luscious vanilla beurre blanc. Once again the portions were quite generous. To close our meal, I received their signature Valentine’s Day dessert, an intense dark chocolate mousse with red rose ice cream. I will admit the final bill was just a bit higher than expected, so this isn’t a place you’d go if you’re on a strict budget. But the romantic setting and carefully modulated acoustics make an excellent option for a special night out.
