Add one more Irish Pub to downtown Boston’s scene for the thirsty set. BFIP shows promise with it’s small outdoor seating area, large dark interior with a reverse-L bar and a decent selection of scotch & whiskey. We arrived on a mid-week afternoon lured in part by some chalkboard scribble advertising $1 oysters. Greeted by a server who couldn’t have been sweeter (or less educated about the menu offerings) we ordered a few of the oysters after we explained to her that, yes, there are in fact different types of oysters that happen to be completely edible. Surprisingly a tin plate of absolutely delectable Blue Points arrived on a bed of ice accompanied by house cocktail sauce and lemon wedges. Expertly shucked, they were some of the best Blue Points I’ve ever had. Following the shellfish, The BBQ Cheese Bacon Burger left much to be desired. Served with a decent dill spear, the bacon/cheddar combo was average & the plate was filled with soggy fries. Not a single crispy french fry! I can’t remember the last time I didn’t eat my fries. This may have been the only time ever. Topped with a leaf of quality lettuce and an underripe tomato puck, the white untoasted bun was forgetable. The saving grace (if there was one) was the patty itself. A very nice ground mix – it was cooked to a perfect med-rare. The other burger at the table was cooked to a perfect medium. Whomever was manning the grill that afternoon was on definitely on point. The house Bloody Mary tasted like repurposed cocktail sauce over ice but the draft beer was cold and the atmosphere was charged with an excellent selection of music. All-in-all I wanted this place to be better than it was. There’s definitely enough promise to warrant a second visit – if not for the fries, then for the whiskey.
