Excellent Shaobing Sandwiches. This upscale Asian sandwich bar in the Financial District features many interesting menu items such as curry rice bowls, soups, noodles, etc but the star of the show are the sandwiches which are served on house-baked fresh shaobing (huoshao) bread, a toothsome Chinese flatbread popular in Mandarin cuisine. They do a booming takeout and catering business but there are also quite a few tables in the spartan modernist dining room.I went with the roast pork sandwich, stuffed with thick slices of fresh, succulent roasted pork, with cilantro and juliened vegetables thrown in. The rich flavor of the pork was evident even through the double squirt of hot sauce that I routinely add to everything I eat. The sandwiches are served, somewhat jarringly, with a pickle spear and a bag of chips. The cinnamon-orange ice tea is also fantastic. Intensely flavored spicy cinnamon, with the natural heat of the cassia mollified by a splash of orange juice. I could drink gallons of this stuff. At $12 for lunch, this isn’t one of the District’s bargain spots, but then again it isn’t trying to be. Cheaper meals can be had in nearby Chinatown or from one of the delightful food trucks on the Greenway.

Good sandwiches, but overpriced. Their sandwiches are not really your typical Asian sandwiches you’d get in Chinatown. They’re tasty. Portions are small unlike other places where they over-stuffed the sandwiches that you can barely fit a bite in your mouth. That could be a plus or minus depending on how you like your sandwiches. A bit overpriced though. I can get a more authentic Asian sandwich for $3.50 :-).
