I was skeptical that the menu could live up to the hype I’d heard about this place and its oysters, but they just might have the secret. Super fresh oysters of great variety. I was very impressed! But the deliciousness didn’t stop there! I tried the cured salmon pastrami in addition to the PEI oysters and would’ve eaten my body weight if my AmEx could stand the hit. But I REALLY came for the lobster roll. I have searched high and low for a sho’ nuff lobster roll in Boston (heck, cape cod…) and this is as close as I’ve come to perfection. I ordered the buttered to avoid any competing flavors…. wisest move. The lobster chunks were perfectly prepared, lightly buttered, and served in a split roll….when your ingredients are this good, you don’t hide them with unnecessary flavors and sauces. Again, I could’ve eaten a couple of these…. it was that good. It is sad, though, that in a seafood town like this you have to spill over a hunnert to get a dozen oysters and a decent Sammich. That’s really the only draw back here-the sticker shock. Even with the hip atmosphere, I didn’t want to pay 135.00 ( tax and tip included in that number) for two entrees, two appetizers, and one NA beer…. yikes. You’ll notice I STILL easily give 4.5 rating because sometimes you just gotta pay for what you want… supply and demand, simple as that. I defy you to find a better taste to dollar ratio in this town. Half a star knock only because it is so loud I couldn’t carry on a conversation- music, very busy dining room (inside and out), and street noise made it hard to linger….. and I would have!
Wow! The crudo and the oysters are amazing! Sitting at the bar, I enjoyed a front row seat, watching the oysters being shucked to order. I really enjoyed the food at Row 34 and the beer selection was extensive and very good- some great local selections. A must visit if you find yourself looking for a classy but casual restaurant in Boston. Very delicious!!!
I had the lobster roll bcs it was recommended but I have a feeling they sell so many bcs they are surrounded by hotels and serve a ton of tourists. 1. They served fresh bread with cold butter. No. 2. They don’t make their own bread…it was a buttered and toasted hot dog bun from the grocery store. No. 3. The lobster wasn’t even sweet. It tasted bland and overpowered by butter. No 4. Those are crisps, not chips. The wine was good…but service doesn’t wow.
Visited for lunch while attending a conference at the Boston Convention Center. We had the clam chowder and spicy lobster tacos to start. Our waitress had the kitchen split the soup for us and offered a fourth taco to make it an even split. We both were happy with the chowder, but loved the tacos by far. My husband got the buttered lobster roll and I the small order of fried oysters. Both were delicious – the fried oysters came with French fries and a tartar sauce while the lobster roll had homemade potato chips on the side with cole slaw. Everything was very good. Between the two of us we had three glasses of wine and finished our meal with their butterscotch pudding – which I wasn’t really going to eat much of however to my surprise I loved it. It wasn’t too sweet and was topped homemade whipped cream and Rice Krispie sprinkled on top. The menu is small but everything was done well and the service was excellent. On the pricey side, but delicious and casual environment. We sat outside in the covered, heated patio.
We absolutely love Row 34 in Portsmouth and were looking forward to our dinner at the Boston location. It took almost 20 minutes for our server to visit our table after we were seated. We gave her the raw bar and oyster order (we knew the drill and what to order and had already filled out the card) and she did a good job of pointing out the oyster selection when she served the starters. The crudo was fantastic as were the oysters. The ceviche, however was smothered in way too much dill and the chips were soggy and almost inedible. After finishing the starters we waited for close to an hour, with dishes on the table and oyster tray melting, unsuccessfully trying to get our server’s attention to put in our dinner order. We all ordered the salmon and the server never asked how we wanted it cooked–we asked as she was walking away and she said medium rare. It came out barely cooked–almost sushi like, though it was very fresh and tasty. The potato salad and green bean side was fine, but nothing inspired. The food overall was fine. The service was less than fine. We’ll stick to the Portsmouth location from now on. Food is amazing and the service is always great.
Row 34 was almost a home run as far as food goes. The oysters, beer, and entrees were delectable. We ordered the chicken cutlet and the lobster roll. Our calamari (ordered as an app) was forgotten and brought out after the entrees. I have honestly had better calamari. We will definitely be returning however, as the rest of our food was great. The atmosphere was lively! We sat outside and the street noise wasn’t a problem at all. chaosandwrinkles.com
Absolutely great experience. Food was delicious and prepared beautifully. I ordered the flat iron steak and it was cooked perfectly. The seafood that was ordered was also done exquisitely. Would definitely recommend it. The draft selection was on point. The service was the best I’ve had in a while.
