Fun, Casual, and Sophisticated. Boston needs more places like this – very spacious and energetic, where you can go wearing a sharp suit or jeans and a tee shirt and feel equally comfortable. We sat downstairs in a quiet booth but the real energy was upstairs where the younger crowd sipped cocktails and ogled each other. My 1822 cocktail was a perfect blend of bourbon infused with cherries, vermouth and bitters which complemented rather than masked the rich bourbon flavor. Rather than get a full meal, we opted to go with a selection of appetizers — the bacon & cheddar stuffed gnocchi was a nightmare to anyone who might be lactose intolerant. A huge plate of tender, light gnocchi baked with gooey, stretchy cheese, larded with bacon and teased with roasted baby tomatoes. Utterly decadent. To go along with this, we got a plate of the beef tongue sliders with flavorful slivers of soft beef tongue on tiny brioche buns (which I would have preferred toasted). The only serious defect of this dish was the use of frozen french fries. I didn’t think they even made frozen french fries anymore. Our final dish was recommended by the waiter: a platter of rabbit fritters, small fried rounds of rabbit meat crusted in a thin breading and topped with a dollop of spicy/creamy remoulade, served with a refreshing carrot-ginger slaw. What’s up doc, indeed. Service was friendly, informal, and attentive and there was a vibrant mix of older couples, tourists, and bros all mixing and having a good time. Some early reviewers were critical of the place not having a specific ‘focus’ and to some degree this is true, it is neither a bistro nor a nightclub nor a pool hall but an oddly pleasant amalgamation of all three. It is also true that the noise level is unnecessarily loud, but that can be said of nearly every Boston restaurant these days, with the advent of giant, cheap flat panel televisions. The only thing I would honestly change would be the tables which should be square not round and the booths which should be dark wood rather than peculiar teal colored formica.
Food tastes great and nice presentatiom. Cool modern wibe, nice staff.
