Not an extensive menu but everything is executed beautifully. Cucumber salad was a delicious start. Bone marrow was an indulgent treat; house fried rice was perfectly balanced and charred eggplant was suprisingly complex. Service is wonderful, attentive and VERY knowledgeable. The space is tiny but does not feel claustrophobic. Vibe is Chinatown meets Motown.
Popped in for a quick dinner bite. Very much in the style of a Japanese izakaya, but with a much smaller food menu range. Food though was good, tasty and service was quick. Quite a small area, but turn over regular. Only had to wait 20min for a table with no dinner reservation,
Went for dinner after 9pm on a Tuesday. Was disappointed they were sold out of all bao and the duck empanada. Definitely hit this place early in the day. Ordered the ceviche, duck fries, and chicken tacos. Ceviche wasamazing, fries were yummy. I think I have other local faves for duck fat fries. The tacos were delicious and while nicely stuffed a little challenging to eat. We ordered a couple of cocktails which I loved but the second round came back with more coconut milk and mixers than I would have liked. Great spot for a more American Chinatown dining experience and nice for date night. Would definitely hit for a meal before 6pm in the future.
Great food and drink in a hip atmosphere. Can this really be Chinatown?Hopefully Shojo’s success will inspire more of the same in the neighborhood.
Excellent, Quirky. In the monotonous sea of uniformity that dominates our Chinatown, this modern Chinese-Japanese restaurant with French influences stands alone. It has a young, hip(ster) atmosphere, with dreadful Rihanna-style caterwauling blasting on the sound system but service is warm and genuine and quite knowledgeable about the menu. We opted for a dinner of small plates – the two standout dishes were the warm glass noodle salad and the haricot verts with marinated tofu which were so addictive we couldn’t stop eating them! The dumplings were done in a style quite different than Taiwanese – much more dense and doughy, I’d probably skip them in the future. If you’ve been to Myers+Chang and liked it, you’ll feel quite comfortable here, and it is a nice break from the food court Chinese-American that most people associate with ‘Chinese’ food in Chinatown.
