Evolved Tremendously Since Opening. Some reviews were quite harsh when they first opened. PEOPLE….. you have to let new places work out the kinks….and boy did they!Had a large group get together for drinks. Pretty much ordered 75% of the menu. Unanimously, we couldn’t find a single dish we didn’t care for. Beef Sate were perfect. Pork belly was scrumptious. Salads a big hit. Too many items to list. Butterscotch bread pudding leaves me having cravings!Give it a try…. or another try. Delightful!
Awe shucks!. It took a few minutes to get acclimated to Canary Sq after the Alchemist memories floated by… but the oysters at the bar for $1 from 5-6pm were awesome with the Gruner by the glass.
Too noisy. We had to walk out – the’ve opened up the whole space which the previous owners (The Alchemist) had wisely split into two sections…quiet and not….Now it’s impossible to have any kind of conversation and the 2 huge TV are obnoxious….
Find your nitch. Although the new interior layout is a giant step up from the Alchemist, I think canary square is missing the mark as to what type of restaurant JP needs. Their menu and prices are on the same tier as bon savor, bella luna, and the haven when they really should be focusing on good beer and reasonably priced pub grub. Maybe more on the lines of a James Gate (Pub Section) for the Hyde Square area.Went there for brunch last weekend because their menu options looked enticing but the food we got was cold and mediocre. I will probably give them a couple months to work out the kinks before I try their dinner. Maybe by then they will lower their prices and hire waitstaff that doesn’t have so much nervous energy.
Ok and hopeful. Driving by last night, we saw that Canary Sq was finally open, so we stopped by for dinner. I’m not sure exactly when they opened, but last night could have been their opening night, so I am keeping that in mind. Service was extremely slow. The popcorn of the night was tasty, but really oily and served only slightly warm. The mac and cheese used Tellegio cheese, which a bit too animalic for my tastes. My chimmicuri skirt steak was cooked perfectly and super tasty. The charred kale was excellent. My wife’s mushroom crepe was good, although served cold. The mixed drinks were excellent. The head chef, Marco, used to be at Bon Savor and produced wonderful food there, so we have high expectations for Canary Sq.Overall, I think that the flaws that we experienced are due to newness and I expect that they will get solved soon. I look forward to returning.
Nice preview lets see about the opening
